Syrian Army soldiers have killed dozens of foreign-sponsored militants during mop-up operations on the outskirts of the capital Damascus.

On Friday, a number of militants were killed during intense clashes with Syrian troops in the town of al-Hejjeira.

A mortar launcher and a heavy machinegun used by anti-government gunmen were also destroyed in the process.

Syrian bomb disposal teams also found and defused two remote-controlled improvised explosive devices, each weighing between 25 and 30 kilograms, on the road leading to the town of al-Rihan.

In addition, three surveillance cameras set in several areas in the town to track the movements of the Syrian Army forces were seized.

Syrian troops also stormed a terrorist hideout in the town of Erbin, and shot dead scores of foreign-backed militants. A large amount of weapons and munitions was also destroyed after the fierce gun battle.

Additionally, Syrian troops clashed with militants on the outskirts of al-Bahariyeh and al-Qassimiyeh towns. Dozens of gunmen were killed in the heavy exchanges of fire.

Units of the Syrian Army attacked gunmen and killed a large number of them in the town of al-Ziyabiyeh.

Clashes were also reported in the districts of Adraa, Rankous and Housh Arab, where many armed men were killed by Syrian soldiers.

Separately, Syrian troops clashed with militants in the town of Jobar, located 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) northeast of Damascus, killing and injuring a number of them.

Similar gun battles erupted in the districts of al-Qaboun and Barzeh. Many foreign-backed gunmen were killed and wounded in the clashes.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since March 2011, and many people, including large numbers of government forces, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

The Syrian government says the West and its regional allies including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey are supporting the militants.

Several international human rights organizations have accused militants operating in Syria of committing war crimes.
