Timeline of police shooting of unarmed man in South Lake Tahoe

Kris JacksonSacramento Bee – by Bill Lindelof

The man killed by a South Lake Tahoe police officer was not armed when shot at a motel earlier this week, according to a press release from the department.

Kris Jackson, 22, of Sacramento died Monday at a hospital following the shooting at the Tahoe Hacienda Inn, 3820 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The officer has told investigators that he “perceived a deadly threat from Kris Jackson” before firing a fatal shot, according to a press release.

Police provided a timeline summarizing dispatch records:

▪ 2:40:21 a.m. Call into dispatch received and the caller reports a female crying and screaming.

▪ 2:41:27 a.m. Two officers were dispatched.

▪ 2:47:28 a.m. Officers arrive on-scene.

▪ 2:49:39 a.m. The involved officer reports on the radio that someone is going out the back window.

▪ 2:49:57 a.m. The involved officer reports the shooting to dispatch.

▪ 2:50:13 a.m. An ambulance is requested.

▪ 2:56:46 a.m. The ambulance arrived on-scene.

Jackson died at about 5 a.m. after being taken to Barton Memorial Hospital.

A search of the shooting scene failed to turn up a firearm or other weapon, according to a police press release.

Meanwhile, Jackson’s family has retained a Sacramento attorney who questions whether the officer followed proper protocol. Lawyer Alan M. Laskin said that Jackson’s girlfriend, who was at the scene, did not hear a command to stop from the officer. Laskin also questions whether Jackson was a threat.

“He was shot while climbing out a window,” Laskin wrote in an email on Wednesday. “Does that sound like he posed a threat?”

Jackson was arrested June 1 by South Lake Tahoe police officers on suspicion of possessing several bags of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. On May 21, he was arrested by South Lake Tahoe police on a warrant out of Sacramento County for a failure to appear in court.

The officer who fired the fatal shot has been placed on paid administrative leave while an investigation is conducted. Once the investigation into the shooting is complete, it will be sent to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office for review.

The police department expressed sympathy to Jackson’s family in the press release, saying, “we recognize family members and loved ones will understandably grieve and express distress regarding the loss of life — our condolences are expressed to those feeling such loss.”

  1. These shootings are getting to be a daily event. A tip toe, peripheral, approach is being taken to curtail these shootings. No serious intent to change the mind set of these officially sanctioned murderers. So, they will continue and to my mind, increase in occurrence. Tell me, what separates modern American law enforcement from the former Ton Ton Macoute of Haiti? I have often stated that an agent of the Ton Ton Macoute and the FBI were interchangeable. Now it is universal among the locals and state. Watch and see.

  2. can someone help me get this straight

this guy was climbing out of a window? obviously out of a place he was not to be in legally?(because there are doors for that)and got shot? did i read that right?

if so..I woulda shot him too
come thru one of my windows leaving or arriving and see if you ever breath again

    or am I wrong?

    maybe he was unarmed ..so
maybe he was incapacitated as he climbed out the window .. so

maybe next time he did this it was your daughter he rapes and kills

i do know a few things .. cant rape a 38 and a 44 makes breaking and entering or home invasion a life sentence
my state has a castle doctrine , and as far as im concerned his acts violated that , armed or not.. doesnt take long once you’ve broke in to become armed

    1. Best I could tell the cop was not a resident of the house nor was he inside the house.

Be it either/both were scum bags there is no legit reason to kill the punk – based on what this story tells.
