Phoenix, Arizona, is the fastest growing city in America, with a population spike of 25,288 to reach 1.63 million residents in 2018, according to U.S. Census data released Thursday.
The majority of the nation’s fastest-growing cities were in the West and the South, while the major hubs of New York City and Chicago continued to see their populations shrink.
San Antonio, Texas, was the second fastest-growing city in 2018, increasing by 20,824 residents to reach 1.53 million people.
Fort Worth, Texas, followed with a population increase of 19,552 to reach 895,008 last year.
In fourth place was Seattle, with a 15,354 spike to reach 744,955 residents.
Charlotte, North Carolina, followed with a 13,151 increase to reach a population of 872,498 in 2018.
Notably, several Southern cities saw big growth, including Austin, Texas (increase of 12,504 to reach 964,254 residents); Jacksonville, Florida (increase of 12,153 to reach 903,889); and Frisco, Texas (uptick of 10,884 to reach 188,170).
In addition, McKinney, Texas grew by 9,888 residents to reach a population of 191,645, and Miami increased by 8,884 to reach 470,914 residents.
The biggest growers in the West included San Diego (up 11,549 residents to reach 1.43 million); Denver (increased 11,053 to reach 716,492); Henderson, Nevada (up 10,759 to reach 310,390); and Las Vegas (up 9,016 to reach 644,644).
New York remains the nation’s largest city by population, with nearly 8.39 million residents – down 39,523 from 2017.
Los Angeles is the second-largest, with a population of 3.99 million – an 8,454 increase compared to 2017.
Chicago ranks third with 2.7 million residents, down 7,073 compared to 2017.
San Jose, California was only other city among the top 20 largest in America to see a population decline, decreasing year-on-year by 2,017 residents in 2018 to reach a total of 1.03 million in 2018.
