for hireThe Organic Prepper

With unemployment rates skyrocketing, going out and finding a new job can be nigh on to impossible these days.  This is only going to get trickier as the government continues to force businesses to increase the minimum wage. Workloads that used to provide employment to two people are now forced onto one. The work performed gets shoddier as the one employed person struggles to keep up, and the number of people who are employed gets lower.

If you don’t have a job, consider making one up. Actually, you might be better to make up several, considering the current economy and how difficult it can be to start a business these days.   Continue reading “The Austerity Diaries: If You Don’t Have a Job, Make One Up”

A Rainy Day Fund is Your Top PriorityThe Organic Prepper

When your finances are tight, sometimes your first impulse is to spend every dime.  Many people focus on things like paying off debts, stocking up on food and supplies, or paying more than the minimum payments on bills.

However, that may not be your best bet.  I know this may sound counterintuitive, but most experts recommend establishing an emergency fund as the first step back to financial security. There are several reasons why this should be a priority for you:   Continue reading “The Austerity Diaries: A Rainy Day Fund is Your Top Priority”

It’s interesting to step over to the dark side sometimes and read the “liberal” perspective on current events. I stumbled across a perfect example of liberal bias this morning when I read an article on a website called “Truthout”.  The author was reflecting on the Las Vegas shooting and an incident in Georgia that also took place this weekend.   Continue reading “I’m a terrorist…You’re a terrorist….Hey! Every flu season, many medical personnel, hospital staff, and educators are faced with a choice: get the flu shot or get fired.

The Preppers BlueprintThe Organic Prepper

When you first take the leap into a prepared lifestyle, it can be overwhelming.  There are so many potential disasters that it’s hard to figure out how to prepare for all of them. What if you could find a reference – in which the information you needed was all together in one place?  What if you could find a book that taught you all you needed to know to get ready for…well, pretty much anything? What if there was a blueprint that organized the steps a family needed to take to be prepared not only for short term disasters, but for long-term self sufficiency?   Continue reading “The Prepper’s Blueprint: A Complete Guide to Freedom Through Self-Reliance”

Have you ever felt “shamed” by someone who hasn’t done enough research to realize the benefits of organic food?  Because of the higher price tag, it seems as though it is the territory of well-to-do families with lots of money on their hands. Some folks roll their eyes and act as though it’s the most ridiculous thing in the world to pay double the price for an untainted apple or milk free from hormones.  Despite the well-documented negative effects of pesticides, hormones, processed foods, and GMOs, opting for organics is seen by many as a frivolous expense.   Continue reading “Dear WIC: Why aren’t organics allowed for poor pregnant women and babies?”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just approved Truvada, a pharmaceutical treatment that can cost up to $14,000 per year, to be marketed and prescribed as a preventative measure to protect against HIV.

That means this expensive drug will be prescribed to hundreds of thousands of Americans in high-risk groups, such as homosexual men and intravenous drug users, not because they actually have HIV, but to prevent them from getting it.   Continue reading “The FDA just approved Big Pharma marketing drug treatments to healthy people”

Breaking up with the supermarketNutritional Anarchy

Back in the beginning of your relationship, it seemed like the supermarket had so much to offer.  The produce sparkled under the fluorescent lights. The colorful packages were inviting and said all of the right things. The meat was all tidily wrapped up in plastic and styrofoam, with nary a drip in sight.

Then one day, you woke up and the honeymoon was over. Like any dysfunctional relationship, as you got to know the grocery store better, you learned that things weren’t as great as they’d seemed in the beginning. In fact, you’d been misled – the things you thought were healthy weren’t really healthy at all.  It was all a lie – most of what the store was selling you wasn’t even actually food. You realized that this relationship was hard on your wallet, it was high maintenance, and it was unhealthy.   Continue reading “How to Break Up with Your Supermarket”

The Happiness ProjectNutritional Anarchy

Are you happy?

I mean right this second. How do you feel? I’m talking about something totally unrelated to the events in your life – I’m asking how you feel inside, irrespective to your job, your love life, and your finances. I’m asking about your overall way of walking through the world. I’m talking about the ability to seize upon those moments of unexpected beauty or joy, and better your day with them.   Continue reading “The Happiness Project”

EXCITOTOXIN-hypothalamus-depression-diet-inflammationNutritional Anarchy – by Aaron Dykes

Excitotoxins disrupt the neuroendocrine system, triggering depression, scientists believe.

Is your depression caused by an inflammatory response? Could excitoxins in the diet in the form of MSG and aspartame be the culprits behind symptoms of depression, behavior disorders and even suicidal tendencies? Many scientists now believe that there is a link.   Continue reading “Is Your Depression Caused by Inflammatory Foods?”

Sorry I do not give out personal informationThe Organic Prepper

Welcome to the wonderful world of surveillance shopping, where the most innocent purchase is documented.

Today I had to run into town to buy some boxes. I really like the U-Haul boxes for storage, because they are all exactly the same size, they’re very sturdy, and they have those nice little handle openings to make stacking things easier.

My usual place wasn’t open so I went to another one that said “Authorized U-Haul Dealer.”  It was also an auto parts store.  I went in and selected my boxes, then took them to the register to pay, something I’d done numerous times at the usual U-Haul store I patronize.   Continue reading “Sorry, But I Don’t Give Out Personal Information”

Raising Competent Kids in an Incompetent WorldOrganic Prepper

It’s probably no surprise that the young people of today aren’t particularly independent.  Not only does the “education” system take great pains to mold them into follow-the-herd, terrified automatons, society in general doesn’t force them to do much for themselves either.

My oldest daughter recently came home for summer vacation and we discussed her first year of college.  She told me that her younger sister, age 13, was much more mature and competent than many of the kids in her student apartment building.  ”I had to show a bunch of them how to do laundry and they didn’t even know how to make a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese,” she said.  Apparently they were in awe of her ability to cook actual food that did not originate in a pouch or box, her skills at changing a tire, her knack for making coffee using a French press instead of a coffee maker, and her ease at operating a washing machine and clothes dryer.  She says that even though she thought I was being mean at the time I began making her do things for herself, she’s now glad that she possesses those skills.  Hers was also the apartment that had everything needed to solve everyday problems: basic tools, first aid supplies, OTC medicine, and home remedies.   Continue reading “Raising Competent Kids in an Incompetent World”

The Weight Loss Industry Has Nothing to do with HealthNutritional Anarchy

The diet industry reached 61 BILLION dollars in 2013 in the United States alone, but people are fatter than ever.  Between magic pills, diet food, and commercial weight loss plans, the obesity epidemic is a HUGE business.

Despite all of the do-good advertising and the inspiring slogans, the secret is, the diet industry doesn’t actually want you to lose weight, at least not for the long term. A customer who fails to maintain weight loss ends up being a long-term customer, contributing to the business’s bottom line. Richard Samber, the former Finance Director for Weight Watchers, was questioned about the company’s 16 percent success rate after five years.  Get ready….he explained “that the business is successful ‘because the other 84 percent have to come back and do it again. That’s where your business comes from.’” (source)   Continue reading “The Weight Loss Industry Has Absolutely Nothing to do with Health”

BPANutritional Anarchy – by Melissa Melton

A University of Illinois at Chicago study just published in the journalEndocrinology has determined that even a low level of exposure to the plastic component bisphenol A, or BPA, during development contributes to an increased risk of developing prostate cancer later in life.

“Previous studies have shown that people who avoided all contact with plastics or other BPA-containing objects for up to a month or more still had BPA in their urine, which means they must have come into contact with BPA in the last 24 to 48 hours, since it clears the body rather quickly,” said Prins, who is director of the UIC andrology laboratory. “It’s very hard to avoid.”

I’m always making a joke that our overblown government couldn’t even get together and make a noodle salad without finding some magical way to screw it up.

Apparently, and sadly so, that snarky bit of sarcasm isn’t all that far off the mark.

Food served at a Food Safety Summit held earlier this month between several of our federal agencies including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Big Food industry giants the likes of Tyson, ConAgra and McDonald’s, actually gave some of the people who attended food poisoning.   Continue reading “The Most Irony Ever: Food Poisoning Strikes Diners at Gov’t Food Safety Summit”
