The “Trump Effect” is taking root in some highly unusual places. We always expected (or at least hoped) that the new administration would prompt things such as employers bringing jobs back to the United States or heightened consumer confidence, but I didn’t anticipate parades being canceled. Yet that’s precisely what seems to have happened in the City of Brotherly Love. The annual Cinco de Mayo parade in Philadelphia was still more than six weeks away but it has already been called off over fears that immigration enforcement officials might be on the scene. Monroe Gordon Piland III (69) has lived an amazing life according to some estimates. In the late 1960’s early 70’s, Piland served as a naval officer, during the Vietnam war. Upon his return to the states, he earned a degree in nutrition from The University of California – Berkeley, and later a medical degree from the prestigious Wake Forest University, formerly a Southern Baptist university. He completed his medical residency in Elizabeth City, NC, and was a board certified medical doctor from 1979-1984. Somewhere along the way, Piland discovered the healing properties of marijuana, a known fact which has been well established in medical journals since before the time Piland became a medical doctor. But that’s also the same time Piland began to have trouble with the law. Now a victim of the war on drugs and a soon to be resident inside the Prison Industrial Complex, Piland will likely die in prison, all because he simply believes the so-called authorities do not have the god-given authority to criminalize the possession and distribution of a plant, something he equates to blasphemy. Former US Attorney Preet Bharara, who was removed from his post by the Trump administration last week, was overseeing an investigation into stock trades made by the president’s health secretary, according to a person familiar with the office.
Tom Price, head of the Department of Health and Human Services, came under scrutiny during his confirmation hearings for investments he made while serving in Congress. Roseville, MI — For months, The Free Thought Project has brought international attention to a very serious problem of police on canine violence. With recent court rulings allowing police to kill citizens’ pets, simply for barking too loudly, law enforcement agencies now have no fear of retaliation for taking the life of man’s best friend. So this next story from Roseville, about a police involved incident dealing with a citizen’s pet, gets a pass, sort of. Canada has been applauded in recent months for its decision to lift visa requirements for Mexican ‘tourists’ as of December 1st. Rather than a visa, under Trudeau’s administration, Mexicans are now only required to have a so-called Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) which can be purchased online for CAD $7.
As one media outlet praised, the move “provides a stark contrast to proposed policies from the US president-elect Donald Trump, who has said he will immediately deport between two and three million illegal immigrants and will build a wall along the US-Mexican border.” Continue reading “Deported Mexicans Vow To Flood Into Canada – Immigrating To “The U.S. Is Over…Now It’s Canada’s Turn””

The federal government collects taxes to finance various public services. As policymakers and citizens weigh key decisions about revenues and expenditures, it is instructive to examine what the government does with the money it collects.
In fiscal year 2015, the federal government spent $3.7 trillion, amounting to 21 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). Of that $3.7 trillion, over $3.2 trillion was financed by federal revenues. The remaining amount ($438 billion) was financed by borrowing. As the chart below shows, three major areas of spending each make up about one-fifth of the budget: Continue reading “Policy Basics: Where Do Our Federal Tax Dollars Go?”
