BB guns mistaken for long rifles in overnight standoff

9 News NBC

DENVER – When two employees first spotted two people entering KIPP Montbello College Prep and Collegiate Prep Academy late Monday night, it was believed they were carrying long rifles and backpacks possibly filled with explosives.

Several hours after armored cars, SWAT teams, a bomb squad and media surrounded the school, the suspects were arrested. Both of the suspects are 15 years old, according to police.

In his second, before-sunrise press conference, Denver Police Chief Robert White said police found the weapons and backpack carried into the school. The weapons were most likely BB guns, and the backpack only contained a computer. KIPP Montbello College Prep and Collegiate Prep Academy is located in the 5200 block of Kittredge Street.

White said it appears the suspects intended to burglarize the school.

The incident began when a burglar alarm went off around 9 p.m. from Greenwood Elementary School in the 5100 block of Durham Court in Denver. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a broken window.

About an hour later, two KIPP Montbello College Prep and Collegiate Prep Academy employees reported the two people they saw entering the school carrying rifles and backpacks.

Both schools are located within about a mile of each other near the intersection of North Chambers Road and Green Valley Ranch Boulevard in far northeast Denver.

Surveillance footage captured the suspects each carrying what appeared to be a long rifle and a backpack.

White said when the suspects – who are not believed to be students at the school – surrendered, they were not in possession of the weapons or the backpacks.

White said he believes this is an isolated incident.

Other schools in the area were also checked by police, and it is not believed any other schools were involved. A reverse emergency notification also went out around 2 a.m. to surrounding areas, but no homes or buildings were evacuated during the investigation.

KIPP Montbello College Prep and Collegiate Prep Academy is expected to open at its usual time Tuesday.
