I’m guessing that a rumor as ignorant as this was started by 12 year olds playing call of duty. They probably also started the fairy fodder from your b-hole bazooka rumor. Silly that someone even wasted their time demonstrating something so obviously stupid.
Another possibility is that someone misinterpreted one of the (true) stories about a soldier being injured by shrapnel when a bullet missed him but struck a nearby object. The soldier is said to have been injured by a “bullet that narrowly missed him,” and the story gets distorted and repeated.
