Cop Enters Man’s Home Without Knocking, Says “No Trespassing” Sign Gave Him Probable Cause: Claim

Information Liberation

From Paulex on Daily Kos:

Recently, I was sitting at my computer, typing away, when I heard the door opening and closing in the next room. It was around lunchtime, so I figured it was my brother (he came home for lunch, once in awhile). I turned toward the doorway, and was stunned to see a uniformed Pennsylvania state trooper striding into the room.

He began peppering me with questions, asking if I lived there, for example, and for me to identify myself. Of course I did (because I did not really want to die or anything like that, the guy was packing a gun, you know?) I was brought up to fear the police; I was taught at an early age that the state police force was originally formed to break the unions, by any means necessary. Also, I knew a lot of people who had been hassled by the cops. My parents had the talk with me (no, not that one, the one about how to survive an encounter with the police). Yeah, poor white boys get that talk too. Yes, I know that racism is a much bigger factor than classism, but that does not matter when a cop is in your house.

After I answered every question he had, I did venture a very polite question, basically, why are you here and why didn’t you knock? The police officer then informed me that he had probable cause to enter my house, because I had posted a “No Trespassing” sign.

Yes, that was his probable cause. He said that, in his experience, that usually meant that the house was in bank foreclosure, and he thought he saw someone walking by a window.

So, you see, “No Trespassing” means, “Come on in without knocking and give me the third degree”. Silly me. I thought that it meant the opposite.

Sheesh.

The man says he’s not going to file a complaint because he fears retaliation and has enough problems in his life already. Unfortunately, that means confirmation for the story is not likely to be forthcoming.

  1. Good way to get shot – Entering a man’s home uninvited and all. But the author does not sound like a gun owner.

  2. Although my property is well posted …..
It serves as a warning to any / all trespassers
    that they’ll not be tolerated.
Years ago it was posted with:
    “Trespassers WILL be shot”
when thievery was a foot in the area.
But they’ve long since taken down, so as not to
draw too much attention in this day and age.

  3. To tell your children that cops and sheriffs are their friends and should be trusted is a total lie and the fools that tell their kids that are living in total denial and blind as fk! Th e last MF on the planet to trust is someone with a badge no matter who they work for.

  4. BAHAHAHA!! A “No trespassing” sign gives a pig probable cause?

OMG…… 🙄 Their insane logic astounds me more and more each day.

So let that be a lesson to you all. If you have a sign that says, “No trespassing”, the cops will come inside your house, but if you have a sign that says, “Welcome to my home”, the cops won’t bother you and will move on.

It’s that backwards, Communist logic again. 😉

  5. No when I lived in America I was forced by police miss conduct. To post my property there No Trespassing No police. For my own safte of what they are in America today. And finally forced to flee America for my safty from the likes of what they are. Because in America today the police are not law. But a pack of I want and can get away with it boys and girls at best. So yes it does happen. The cop was on a I don’t like with a gun on his hip. And a badge to squat behind for cover.

  6. That is when the saying “wrong house” engraved on your gun muzzle becomes “ironic”

Some people need to read the fine print.

  7. “Recently, I was sitting at my computer, typing away,…”

    Okay.

“…when I heard the door opening and closing in the next room.”

    Then what?

“…I figured it was my brother…”

A logical assumption. But it wasn’t?

“…I turned toward the doorway, and was stunned to see a uniformed Pennsylvania state trooper striding into the room.”

    What happened next?

“He began peppering me with questions,…”

The FIRST one being? (wait for it…)

    ” asking if I lived there,…”

So, you’re sitting at a computer typing, with unlocked doors, NO sign of forced entry, and Barney Fife strolls on in and asks if you live there?

    Rocket scientist, obviously.
