  1. According to Tonya Moreno, CPA, at About.com, 7 states do not collect income taxes: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming; and Tennessee and New Hampshire only levy income tax on dividend and interest income. New Hampshire and Texas have some of the highest property taxes in the nation, with New York levying the highest tax rate on property.

By ranking the total tax burden, such as property, sales, income tax, etc., compared to income, Alaska, Nevada, Wyoming, Florida, and New Hampshire residents pay the least in taxes; and New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, and Hawaii pay the most.
