LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The Troy police officer accused of driving drunk and crashing his car into a Colonie police vehicle pleaded not guilty.
Kevin P. McKenna, 26, was arrested shortly after midnight Saturday on Troy-Schenectady Road near Goodrich Avenue.
McKenna was driving a Chevy Silverado pickup truck when he crashed into the back of a Colonie Police transportation vehicle as it was pulled over conducting a traffic stop. Police said their lights were flashing at the time.
Court documents said the patrolman saw McKenna’s vehicle coming at him and jumped up a snowbank and out of the way. McKenna was then stopped. He had a female passenger inside the vehicle at the time.
Colonie police said McKenna refused a field breath test as well as a breathalyzer test at the police station.
He was charged with DWI and is facing other charges for refusing the breath test as well as for operating an uninspected motor vehicle.
Court documents say McKenna had glassy eyes, impaired speech, and a smell of alcohol on his breath at the time of the crash.
Chief John Tedesco says McKenna is on paid leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation into the charges. His attorney, Stephen Coffey, expects McKenna to return to work once the matter is resolved.
“No one was killed; no one was injured,” he said. “There’s nothing really to say. He’s been charged. He’s pleaded not guilty, and we’re going through the process. There’s really not much else to say. I know that’s not really informative, but that’s essentially what we’re talking about.”
McKenna has been a member of the Troy police force since 2015.
He is due back in court on April 11.
