Dr. Anthony Fauci has been reluctant to support a federal mask mandate.
Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has been urging Americans to use masks for months. “I have trust in the American people that if we put a strong emphasis on the importance of wearing masks, that we will come around and do that and get that percentage up above the relatively low percentage of people that are using masks,” Fauci said on July 21 on NPR’s Morning Edition.
But he has said before that he doesn’t think a federal law would be the way to go.
“I don’t like to be authoritarian from the federal government, but at the local level, if governors and others essentially mandate the use of masks when you have an outbreak, I think that would be very important,” Fauci told Alabama Sen. Doug Jones during a Facebook live event in July.
Until now.
“Well, if people are not wearing masks, then maybe we should be mandating it,” Fauci told CNN’s Erin Burnett Friday.
Covid-19 has been worsening across the United States, with cases rising in 32 states Friday and holding steady in 17 more. The University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation said the country was entering a winter surge as new infections passed 75,000 in a single day on Friday and more than 800 deaths were reported.
Mask mandates may be tricky to enforce, but it might be time to call for them, Fauci said.
“There’s going to be a difficulty enforcing it, but if everyone agrees that this is something that’s important and they mandate it and everybody pulls together and says, you know, we’re going to mandate it but let’s just do it, I think that would be a great idea to have everybody do it uniformly,” he said.

I went to the mall for the first time in months yesterday (Stonebriar Mall, Frisco, TX). For a Saturday, it looked like a bunch of zombies walking around wearing masks and not knowing where to go because they wanted to shop and be entertained but there was nothing open or interesting to see or shop for anymore. It was more like just a place of shelter for families or something as most were just congregating at the food court and the stores that were open either had that Walmart cow tow line at the entrance or had downsized their stores to the point that there is more space than product (probably using the “social distancing“ propaganda as their excuse).
It’s pathetic. I felt like I was in the movie, “They Live” or “Day of the Dead” or something, that I couldn’t take it any more and left within 20 minutes. It was so freaky.
Also, I’m so sick of every store playing the same “important safety message” every 5 minutes in their store while I’m trying to shop. I don’t need mommy telling me to keep a safe distance and to wear a mask while shopping in order to keep all the other sheep safe. It’s so forced down your that you can’t even enjoy shopping anymore. And people just go with it like the zombies that they are.
Unfrigginbelievable….what this world has become. And they still think this whole thing isn’t coordinated and controlled by a single elite group running the world. Billions of people in the world and millions of stores and you’re telling me that everyone of them just happens to be playing the SAME EXACT MESSAGE?
It’s like those video compilations of news stations around the country playing the SAME EXACT holiday message with different tones of voice. Are people really this stupid?
