A former New York Police Department officer whose trial in an alleged kidnapping and cannibalism plot drew an international media frenzy walked free Wednesday after being sentenced on a minor charge.
Gilberto Valle, who was dubbed the “Cannibal Cop” by tabloids, was sentenced to 12 months already served in prison and a year of supervised release for illegally using a police database.
Mr. Valle, 30 years old, was convicted in March 2013 in a conspiracy to kidnap, rape, torture, cook alive and eat several women, including his wife. The jury’s decision was overturned in June by a federal judge, who ruled there was insufficient evidence to support the conviction. The case against Mr. Valle rested on emails and online messages.
But U.S. District Judge Paul Gardephe upheld Mr. Valle’s conviction for illegally using a police database, which prosecutors said he used to gather information about potential victims.
Mr. Valle, wearing gray suit and a dark-patterned tie, walked out of the federal courthouse in downtown Manhattan with his lawyer, mother and other family members.
He said he wants to become a defense attorney.
“I’m ready to start rebuilding my life,” he said. “My legacy is not going to be the story of the Cannibal Cop.”
Mr. Valle, who was arrested in October 2012 and has been at home, under court monitoring, since the June reversal, faced a maximum sentence of one year.

You don’t see many investigations into congressional pedophilia for the same reasons. The freaks who enjoy this stuff are very powerful people, and I do believe that the power they wield makes them more likely to indulge in these kinds of extreme sexual deviancy.

State Law Varies here. But with a fellony conviction on his record. Will the Bar let him become a Attorney in that State or would he need move to a different State as well? I can see wer he would have a good future in law defending Cops. He knows wer the evidence is hid and how to keep it hid defending them. So he might make a fine Attorney defending his own breed of people. And as they say once a cop always a cop the thin blue line is never broke. So a large client base to work with.
