Gun Control, Rights Advocates Rally in Blacksburg

People on both sides of the gun debate rallied in Blacksburg on Friday.

Families of victims of the Virginia Tech and Newton shootings gathered as part of the No More Names: National Drive to Reduce Gun Violence. The program is a 25-state bus tour over a period of 100 days, advocating what the group calls “common sense” gun policies.

Gun rights advocates were also present at the event, and made their position known.

“All of this stuff is an attempt to control something. And gun control is about control. It’s not as much about guns. It’s a way of controlling people,” said Philip Van Cleave with the Va. Citizens Defense League.

“I recognize those rights,” says Andrew Goddard, a parent of VT shooting victim. “But those rights don’t exist for everybody. There are people who should not have access to guns, and the only way to make sure they don’t have access is to try and stop them getting access.”

The tour was organized by Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
