An illegal immigrant is believed to be back in Honduras after jumping bail on a motor vehicle homicide charge in Nebraska.
William La Jeunesse reported the latest this morning on the case of Edwin Mejia, which has sparked national outrage because federal authorities refused to issue a detainer so police could keep him in custody.
Police in Omaha say Mejia was drunk and street racing on January 31 when he slammed his pickup into the back of a stopped SUV, killing 21-year-old Sarah Root.
The 19-year-old’s blood-alcohol level was reportedly .241 and he was driving with a suspended license.
La Jeunesse said police then called four times over a period of 12 hours to request that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issue the necessary detainer.
When it did not come through, police had to allow Mejia to post bail.
Mejia arrived in the United States illegally as an unaccompanied teenager and was allowed to stay as a refugee.
He’s now on ICE’s most-wanted list for motor vehicle homicide, but authorities believe he has fled to his native Honduras.

ICE said last month that Mejia’s arrest did not meet its “enforcement priorities” for issuing the necessary detainer.
Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) brought up the issue in a Senate hearing last month, grilling ICE director Sarah Saldana on why the agency did not grant the detainer.
He pointed out that ICE subsequently admitted that Mejia was a threat to public safety.
Saldana argued that ICE officials didn’t have enough time to act on the request from police.
