A North Carolina police officer is suing Starbucks for $50,000 after spilling a free cup of coffee on himself.
Matthew Kohr claims he was burned after the hot coffee cup lid came off and the cup folded in on itself at a Raleigh Starbucks in January 2012.
He suffered burns, blisters and emotional damage, his attorneys said in court Monday, WRAL-TV reported.
The $50,000 in compensation includes damages for medical bills. He claims the stress of the burns intensified his Crohn’s disease, causing him to need surgery to remove part of his intestine.
Kohr’s wife, Melanie, lost “a source of emotional support, her social companion and her intimate partner” after the incident, the lawsuit claims.
Starbuck’s attorneys argued that Kohr should not be compensated because he did not purchase the coffee.
It’s not the first time customers have sued the java giant for burns sustained from hot beverage spills.
In 2010, A U.S. appeals court dismissed a Manhattan woman’s $3 million lawsuit against Starbucks after she claimed she was scalded by hot tea.

Hope he wins this one for millions. Every truck driver in America will then become multimillionares and not need to deliver his coffee grounds to him to have for free. And to think they need pay for the cr@p on top of that. Why was the officer taking a bribe here?? As that is what free things to public emploies is. A bribe to them for special favors. Makes you wonder if they did not throw in a counter girl to sweeten the deal.

Taking no responsibility on himself handling a cup of free HOT coffee. Now there’s a surprise.
Anyone hear him say ‘I was afraid for my life’ during the mishap which was not his fault at all?
He’s just doing what needs to be done when it’s someone else’s fault that they offered him a FREE cup of HOT coffee and he took it.
It’s not like they spilled the HOT coffee on him; it was handed over for him to deal with. He just couldn’t deal with handling the offensive HOT coffee; it must have been resisting and brute force was needed, due to fear for himself.
I’m surprised he didn’t taser that FREE cup of HOT coffee that he willingly accepted, to get it to comply.
Now, the lawsuit to pay off his debts because his balls are just too darn small.
And he feared for his life.
