Since time began for human beings, we have relied on our senses, particularly eyes to relay the light and shadows from which we ‘decode’ visual reality through the Pineal Gland to the brain. We also decode sounds, feelings, tastes and smells from which the brain then creates ’concepts’ we can express in language, music and art.
In the world of TV and cinema this decoding is known as pictorial semiotics.
Semiotics is a broad investigation into how meaning is created and how meaning is communicated. Its origins lie in the academic study of how signs and symbols (visual and linguistic) create meaning.
It is a way of seeing the world, and of understanding how the landscape and culture in which we live has a massive unconcious impact on all of us.
Brian Springer brings an Artist’s insight to the ‘decoding’ of visual material as prepared (by what is left out as well as what’s used as news) to a dimension that must change your ways of decoding news reports…
[He] “spent a year scouring the airwaves with a satellite dish grabbing back channel news feeds not intended for public consumption. The result of his research is SPIN, one of the most insightful films ever made about the mechanics of how television is used as a tool of social control to distort and limit the… public’s perception of reality. Take the time to watch it from beginning to end and you’ll never look at TV reporting the same again. Tell your friends about it. This extraordinary film released in the early 1990s is almost completely unknown. Hopefully, the Internet will change that. Links to other SPIN videos are listed below this film…More ‘SPIN’ Videos:
