The Black Friday Games: “May the Odds Be Ever in Your Favor”

It’s that time of year again! No Black Friday would be complete without tales of shoppers behaving badly. Let the games begin!

Effie Trinket: “Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor.”

Walmart opened at 6 pm on Thanksgiving day this year because hey – why not get a head start on the impending mayhem?

Walmart’s US CEO Bill Simon described the chain’s early Black Friday sales as “bigger, better, faster, cheaper and safer than ever.”

Bigger? Maybe. Better? Doubtful. Safer? Not likely, as early reports reveal that all hell is already breaking loose.

This video shows a scene at a Walmart store in Elkin, N.C. New York Filmmaker Brian Spain recorded it. He was kicked out for recording the incident – but the fella who was bullying other customers was not stopped or asked to leave.

“I immediately had an employee — I assume the manager since he was the one that kicked me out — tell me that I had to turn my camera off and leave the store or I would be arrested for trespassing,” Spain said.

Thankfully Walmart’s alert employees are on watch and are working hard to eject dangerous customers from their stores!

At 6:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, two men got into a fight in a Virginia Walmart parking lot – over a PARKING SPACE:

Sheriff Brian Hieatt tells WVVA it happened in the Walmart parking lot. He says two men, 61-year-old Ronnie Sharp of Russell County and 35-year-old Christopher Jackson of Jewell Ridge in Tazewell County, were arguing over a parking space.

This escalated into a threat with a firearm, and then Hieatt says Sharp used a knife to cut Jackson in the arm, slicing down to the bone.

Sharp is charged with malicious wounding and brandishing a firearm. Police seized a rifle from him.

Jackson, the victim, was treated at Clinch Valley before being taken to jail. He is charged with disorderly conduct and assault and battery, both misdemeanors.

Gale Hawthorne: “People wanna fight!”

The fights aren’t limited to Brawlmart stores:

Haymitch: “I want you guys to forget everything you think you know about the games. Last year was child’s play. This year, you’re dealing with all experienced killers.” – Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games Trilogy

With more stores opening on Thanksgiving, malls have been seeing more guests who drank too much booze with their turkey, said Garth Gasse, director of retail operations and asset protection at the Retail Industry Leaders Association, an Arlington, Virginia, trade group.

“They’ve probably consumed a few and they probably shouldn’t be out shopping,” Gasse said.

Alcohol, frenzied shoppers, and heavily discounted products don’t mix, folks.

This Tweeter summed up the Black Friday Games perfectly:

Is this really what things have come to?

“Stupid people are dangerous.”
― Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games

Indeed, and they are out there proving it to the world today.

Some things are worth fighting for.

Parking spaces don’t even make my list.

    Pitiful.
