“I went up to the counter and he basically told me you gotta leave,” said Isabella Red Cloud.
Red Cloud recorded the encounter at the Union Gospel Mission Saturday morning. She says because she was dressed in women’s clothing, she was asked to leave.
“He turned around the he’s like ‘you’re a man, when you come here, you’re to dress like a man’ and I was like but I’m a transgender. And he’s like ‘I don’t care, you gotta leave,’” said Red Cloud.
“It’s a haven, rather than a hole,” said Fran Stenberg, director of Union Gospel Mission.
Stenberg says he supports his employee’s actions.
“When they come here, they function as we function. If you want to be a participant here, be as they are. And so we have to do that for their own protection and for the protection of others and so forth as well. Somebody comes here drunk and disorderly, they’re asked to leave. And this is no different. It’s just a different situation,” said Stenberg.
Red Cloud and others marched to the Union Gospel Mission Sunday with the hopes of attending a church service.
“Just basically representing that we as a gay pride community are not going to stand for this,” said Red Cloud.
When asked if this is considered discrimination, Stenberg says yes.
“It is. You can’t deny that it isn’t discrimination. But it’s discrimination from the other direction as well. They came in here last night protesting and interrupting the chapel service. That to me is the same thing,” said Stenberg.
Stenberg says transgender people are welcome, but only if —
“If they dress as what they are, yes. That’s all we ask for because they need to be as we are so that it’s a uniformity for what we stand for, what we are,” said Stenberg.
“We’re all God’s children,” said Red Cloud.
Those with Bishop Dudley House and The Banquet told us they don’t deny anyone service, no matter their gender identity, what they’re wearing or mental capacity.
“We’re all God’s children,” said Red Cloud.
There are two peoples in the world.
