Update: Man in Custody After Deadly Ambush on Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy

Update: ABC 13

Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, has just left an accident scene when he stopped by a gas station on Telge and West Road. As he was pumping gas, a man approached him from behind, said nothing and fired multiple shots. Once the deputy fell to the ground, the suspect fired more shots. Deputy Goforth was pronounced dead on the scene.

An intense manhunt covered Harris County for hours overnight. At about 2:30am, authorities converged on a home on Crystal Lake in Copperfield, led there by a tip. The focus of the investigation is on the red pickup truck in the home’s driveway. The person of interest was taken into custody at what’s said to be his mother’s house. His identity has not been released.

The man’s mother — who didn’t want to show her face or give her name — tells Eyewitness News her son is innocent. She said, “My son is innocent. I was in the house with him, so when that happened, my son was home.”

A sheriff’s deputy in uniform was shot and killed Friday night while filling up his patrol car at a suburban Houston gas station, according to authorities.

Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, was pumping gas into his vehicle about 8:30 p.m. Friday when a man approached him from behind and fired multiple shots, Harris County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ryan Sullivan told The Associated Press. Once the deputy fell to the ground, the suspect fired more shots.

Harris County Sheriff Deputy Darren Goforth.Police described the suspect as a dark-complexioned male who is believed to be between 20 and 25 years old, and stands about 5-foot-10 to 6-feet tall. He was wearing a white T-shirt and red shorts and driving a red or maroon pickup-style truck with an extended cab. Police said an intensive search for the suspect remained ongoing Saturday morning.

No motive was determined for the shooting. Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said Goforth, who was a 10-year veteran of the force, had a wife and two children.

“In my 45 years in law enforcement, I can’t recall another incident so cold-blooded and cowardly,” Hickman said.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Deputy Thomas Gilliland said Goforth had traveled to the Chevron station where the shooting happened, after earlier responding to a routine car accident.

“He was pumping gas into his vehicle. and the male suspect came up behind him and shot the deputy multiple times,” Gilliland told the Houston Chronicle. “The deputy fell to ground. the suspect came over and shot the deputy again multiple times as he lay on the ground.”

He said Goforth died at the scene. Detectives were checking security camera video for possible clues.

“We are actively searching for suspect right now,” Gilliland said. “I can tell you with diligence and justice the suspect will be caught. And he will be brought to justice … This is a very callous individual.”

Harris County Sheriff’s deputies and homicide investigators joined officers from other agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Houston Police Department, in searching for the suspect.

“This is a very tough moment right now for the Harris County Sheriffs Office,” Gilliland said. “Keep us in your prayers and in your thoughts.”

Bob Goerlitz, president of the Harris County Deputies Organization, said the incident was “shocking.”

“We’ve been warned of things like this, because of public sentiment nationally and events over the last few years … It’s just horrific. That’s the only way to describe it.”

  2. “We’ve been warned of things like this, because of public sentiment nationally and events over the last few years … It’s just horrific. That’s the only way to describe it.”

No, you moron. You were SET UP for things like this, and you deserve what you’re going to get for agreeing to be commie thugs.

“No motive was determined for the shooting.”

No motive? How about robbery, rape, murder, torture, abuse and brutality? Sounds like plenty of motive for me, and I’m glad the commie-ass-kissing pig finally got what he deserved.

My hat’s off to the shooter, and I hope he gets away.

  3. Dark complected male. Is this the new term for a black guy? Are they trying to get the light complected folks angry with the dark complected folks?

    1. Well Katie, he better be more “dark complected” than that hand and wrist pointing that pistol in that latest production of “As the World Spins” (to oblivion).

  4. Deputy Goforth?!? He must be related to Dylann Roof. If this even happened, one has to wonder how much murder and brutality this deputy has dished out over the last decade. Cops have no regard for human or animal life, I have no regard for cops. What goes around comes around.

  5. “A sheriff’s deputy in uniform was shot and killed Friday night while filling up his patrol car at a suburban Houston gas station,…”

    OUTSTANDING!!!

    Best story of the week!

  6. “In my 45 years in law enforcement, I can’t recall another incident so cold-blooded and cowardly,” Hickman said.”

I can recall HUNDREDS, you sorry piece of WORTHLESS SH#T! And they ALL involve PIGS SHOOTING UNARMED AMERICANS.

Get used to it, scumbag, ’cause there’s a WHOLE LOT MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM!!!

      1. As digger would say, “A pig is a pig is a pig!” BTW, fish dinner or not last night #1?
On a side note, CNN proclaimed 87 people a day are killed with guns. What they failed to mention is how many of those were pigs shooting civilians.

        1. Naww, they jacked up the fishing a couple weeks or so ago when they dumped a bunch of water from Green Peter Lake into Foster. The first one I caught was a decent size trout, but it had what looked like parasites of some sort, plus a nasty looking lesion on one side. It didn’t put up much of a fight for its size, apparently weakened by the parasites, so I broke its neck to put it out of its misery.
Then I caught a Yellow Perch (which I had to look up when I got home to identify, having never seen one before), Threw his @ss back, but while I was bringing him in my other pole got hit, and I missed that one, being otherwise occupied at the time.

Up until they raised the water level I was bringing home limits more often than not.

          1. I would do a “test fry” on those yellow perch, if you can find one unmolested by parasites. Parasites, we got enough of them walking the streets in this society. They lurk in the bushes, meet in back rooms, connive, lie, cheat, and steal. Somehow, that seems to meld right in with the definition of a parasite.

  7. Cop was probably raping the dudes wife
    So he made him stop

Or , maybe this guy was hired by bikers to thin the herd
After all didn’t a bunch of texas cops murder a bunch of bikers not too far back in Waco ?

  8. Oh I feel so bad for the cop. They never act like this to the people.. Hmmm.
What goes around comes around. Kick a dog long enough and he’ll bite your
dumb ass. If this guy was a “unconstitutional enforcer of tyranny”, you know a cop, he’d be on paid leave for a while, then brought back with a promotion. Must of been a good guy instead.
