World’s largest gun show is still set to go ahead in Las Vegas

The world’s largest gun show is still set to go ahead in Las Vegas just months after it was the location of the worst mass shooting in US history.

Tens of thousands of gun enthusiasts from all over the world will descend on the Strip in January for the annual exposition of firearms and ammunition – less than three miles from where Stephen Paddock opened fire on a crowd of country music festival goers.

Almost 60 people were slaughtered and another 527 were injured in the massacre before Paddock turned the gun on himself. Cops found ten automatic rifles in his room.

Now organizers of the SHOT (Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade) gun show have confirmed there will be no venue change for their three day event, at the Sands Expo Center, beginning on January 23.

Around $6.5million worth of guns, ammunition and weapon related merchandise will be on display at the trade show – which is not open to the general public.

It is expected to attract 65,000 people from all over the US and 100 different countries.

The only acknowledgement the organizers made to the deadly mass shooting on Sunday was a condolence message posted on their website, which read: ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of all those killed and injured in the criminal attack in Las Vegas.’

The website describes the event as ‘the largest and most comprehensive trade show for all professionals involved with the shooting sports, hunting and law enforcement industries.’

A spokesperson said: ‘Out of respect for the families of the victims and the law enforcement process, we are not going to comment or participate in media requests made relating to this attack.’

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), which host the show, declined to comment.

Other gun shows planned across Nevada are also due to go ahead despite fears of further mass shootings.

Shows will be held in Lansing, Grand Rapids, Cadillac, Port Huron, Kalamazoo and Novi, where attendees can buy and sell weapons.

Organizers say there will be tight security at the event including a check-in program and entrance screening.

The Vegas mass shooting has renewed calls for gun controls from many.

Caleb Keeter, a guitarist with the Josh Abbott Band, which played the festival earlier on Sunday, said he had been a lifelong supporter of the right to bear arms ‘until the events of last night. I cannot express how wrong I was.’

‘We need gun control RIGHT. NOW. My biggest regret is that I stubbornly didn´t realize it until my brothers on the road and myself were threatened by it,’ Keeter said on Twitter.

Hillary Clinton had tweeted after the tragedy, warning that if the NRA got it’s way, by easing up on rules on gun silencers, it could have been even worse.

‘The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots. Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get,’ she tweeted, adding: ‘Our grief isn’t enough. We can and must put politics aside, stand up to the NRA, and work together to try to stop this from happening again.’

Jimmy Kimmel, a Las Vegas native, gave an emotional monologue during his show on Monday, where he challenged President Trump and Congress to take real action against gun violence.

Choking up with tears, he discussed some of the victims, before pointing out the hypocrisy between America’s response to foreign terror attacks, and home grown mass shootings.

‘When someone with a beard attacks us, we tap phones, we invoke travel bans, we build walls, we take every possible precaution to make sure it doesn’t happen again. But when an American buys a gun and kills other Americans, then there’s nothing we can do about that. And the Second Amendment, I guess, our forefathers wanted us to have AK-47s is the argument, I assume,’ he said, sarcastically.

Stephen Colbert opened The Late Show with a speech demanding Trump and Congress work together to pass some form of gun control – ‘Anything, would be better than nothing,’ he said.

‘If we are facing pure evil, then by all means offer thoughts and prayers. But think about what you need to do — and then pray for the courage to do it.’
