There were over 3,500 authorized wiretaps in the U.S. last year, mostly related to drug cases. One state, however, has far more wiretaps than any other based on its population.
That state is … Nevada. Data from the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts shows that the state had 38.2 wiretaps per 500,000 residents. That’s quite a bit considering Colorado came in second-place with 12.4!
The figure is probably so high because Nevada has a lot of visitors every year, but its resident population is small at under 3 million people. And it’s not surprising that most of the Nevada wiretaps took place near Las Vegas in Clark County.
California and New York were the only other states with over 10 wiretaps per 500,000 residents. California also led the nation in total wiretaps because of its large population.
On the other end of the spectrum, Hawaii, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Vermont had no wiretap requests last year. So if you don’t want the government listening in, it might be time to move.
The report highlights the trend away from land lines in this country. Almost all of the wiretaps took place on cellphones and other mobile gadgets.
