For more than three days Israel has executed a bombing campaign on the Gaza Strip, home to more than 1.5 million Palestinians. Several hundred airstrikes on civilian-dominated areas were ordered by the Israeli military, killing at least 91 people, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

A Mexican federal judge sent Andrew Tahmooressi back to prison after the U.S. Marine sergeant made his first official courtroom appearance since being locked up more than three months ago for accidentally crossing the border with guns in his pickup truck.

The 26-year-old veteran of two tours in Afghanistan was finally able to tell his story to a judge, after his case had been delayed by both Mexico’s unpredictable legal system and his own trouble settling on a lawyer. It was a tally of 6-2 in favor of the resolution that states that city staff and agencies must decline federal requests or demands to set up any facility to house, process, or detain illegal immigrants.

Monday morning began with a jolt along the western coast of Mexico when a deadly 6.9-magnitude earthquake shook buildings as far away as Mexico City.

The large temblor occurred at 6:23 a.m. local time (7:23 a.m. Eastern time), five miles northeast of Puerto Madero, Mexico. The epicenter was near the Guatemalan border, where strong shaking was also felt, according to RT.com.

Firefighters spokesman Raul Hernandez says at least two people were killed in the Guatemalan town of San Marcos. The U.S. will remain the world’s biggest oil producer this year after overtaking Saudi Arabia and Russia as extraction of energy from shale rock spurs the nation’s economic recovery, Bank of America Corp. said.

U.S. production of crude oil, along with liquids separated from natural gas, surpassed all other countries this year with daily output exceeding 11 million barrels in the first quarter, the bank said in a report today. The country became the world’s largest natural gas producer in 2010. Calculating share indexes such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and showing this index in a historical graph is a useful way to show which phase the industrial revolution is in. Changes in the DJIA shares basket, changes in the formula and stock splits during the take-off phase and acceleration phase of industrial revolutions are perfect transition-indicators. The similarities of these indicators during the last two revolutions are fascinating, but also a reason for concern.
