The California State Board of Education has rejected a proposed ethnic studies curriculum for the state’s schools, saying it “falls short and needs to be substantially redesigned.”

The Jewish community is among several minority groups that have protested the draft. Earlier this month, the California Legislative Jewish Caucus said that the curriculum “effectively erases the American Jewish experience,” “omits anti-Semitism,” “denigrates Jews” and “singles Israel out for condemnation.”  Continue reading “California Board of Education rejects proposed curriculum that angered Jews”

An East London council banned a charity bike ride raising money for Palestinian children from using its public parks, internal emails revealed last week.

The council also secretly sent a list of proposed speakers to the Metropolitan Police asking if they were “extremist,” The Electronic Intifada can reveal.  Continue reading “Anti-Semitism definition behind secret ban on aid to Palestinian children”

Tower Hamlets council in London last month prevented a bike ride raising awareness of the plight of the Palestinian people from using space in one of its parks. We now know that the council feared that this advocacy for Palestine would violate the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism (UK council refused to host Palestinian event over antisemitism fears, 3 August). This use of the IHRA definition demonstrates the real threat to freedom of expression that it represents, ignoring its protection in our national rights legislation.  Continue reading “Freedom of expression on Palestine is being suppressed”

You should call the Plumas Co sheriff and have them go to the garage.” Continue reading “Calif. PDs fear ‘suicide by cop’ cases. So they’ve stopped responding to some calls”

Gilbert, AZ — Samantha Glass, 36, was clearly drunk, but non-violent and entirely peaceful when she was approached by a Gilbert police officer who wrongfully accused her of trying to break into a truck. Glass never tried to break into said truck, however, during the officer’s investigation into his accusations, this small woman would be violently slammed face-first into the concrete. Glass was badly injured and the subsequent brain damage she suffered from the assault is now the subject of a federal lawsuit.  Continue reading “Taxpayers to Be Held Liable As Body Cam Shows Cop Smash Tiny Drunk Woman’s Face Into Concrete”

The state and its enforcers are not known for their common sense and proficient use of discretion. Instead, they are known for the opposite. An example of this lack of common sense and discretion was evident this week when an innocent family was thrown off of a public beach for shading their young children with a small half-moon tent.

Courtney Jackson, owner of Claws Nail & Beauty Bar in St. Catharines, Ontario, took her family to the beach this week on her only day off. Instead of having a relaxing time and soaking up the beauty of Crystal Beach, she was humiliated and threatened by police who forced her and her entire family to get off the beach — all over a tiny tent.  Continue reading “Hero Cops ‘Protect’ the Public By Kicking Family Off Beach for Shading Kids with a Tent”

There are too many f**king guns in America,” says Corey Taylor. “I could walk outside right now and find a gun within minutes. There’s a very toxic gun culture here, it’s a cult, and it worries me.”

Two days after the Slipknot frontman says this, a man walks into a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, during one of the busiest times of the day, and starts shooting – 22 people lose their lives and more than two dozen are injured. The next day, in Dayton, Ohio, a man opens fire at the entrance of a local bar. He kills nine people, and injures 27.  Continue reading “Slipknot: ‘Gun culture in America is a cult’”
