California Cop Tells UAV Owner That His Aircraft Creates ‘Suspicion Of A Crime’

Aero News

The creator of the YouTube channel The Junkyard News was capturing images of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department station in Lake Forest, CA recently, and he had happened to bring along his UAV to the shoot.

But before he could get the aircraft off the ground, he was approached by deputies, who had some questions for him.

According to the blog “Photography is Not A Crime”, the only question the person would answer was when he was asked “Just taking pictures?”  “Yeah,” he reportedly said, but then said he would not answer further questions.

He was then told that he should not fly the UAV “for safety reasons.”

A second deputy was not so accommodating. The person was known to the deputies as being someone who posted videos to YouTube, and when the second deputy began to question him, he said that he had already answered questions from the first officer.

The second deputy told the man he was being detained. “Under suspicion of what crime,” the man reportedly asked. “Flying a drone,” the deputy answered.

Now, the aircraft had never left the ground, but the photographer was accused of flying the UAV above the FAA’s 400 foot altitude limit.

When the deputy realized he was being captured on camera illegally detaining a citizen, he threatened to call homeland security.

The deputies also accused the photographer of flying the aircraft over private buildings … even though the police building is public property.

Eventually, the photographer walked away free, but as more people have UAVs, and laws remain vague, these kinds of incidents are only likely to increase.

    1. Yes, somewhere in that zone, I think it’s around 80 tops. If one scores too high on the entrance exam, you’ll not be admitted into the training academy.

      1. Yeah, I actually heard that before. They claim it’s because people with too high of intelligence will get bored being a cop. We know the real reason though, don’t we?

        1. Of course, doesn’t have a damned thing to do with boredom. Higher intelligence can imply traits like discretion, ethics, morals, compassion, and respect. They can’t have that when training the mindless that We The People are the enemy.

Officer, the presence of your uniform and badge creates suspicion that you are both a criminal and a cold blooded killer . . .

  2. So cops can fly UAVs but We the People can’t. I see how it is. So much for equal Rights. I thought all men and women were created equal in this country? Oh that’s right. We don’t have a country anymore because we don’t have a rule of law.

  3. BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Cameraman to the Sheriff: “Can I ask you one thing? The Constitution.”

Sheriff gets stumped by the question: “I’m not a Constitutional lawyer.”

    OHH!!! Sheriff just got BUSTED!!!

He’s a sheriff and doesn’t know about the Constitution. Well why is he a sheriff then if he doesn’t know the Constitution?

    Burned!

Notice how they played that quietly surrounding of the suspect thing and then yelled at him for getting too close to the street after they were pushing him towards it. Typical gang mentality.

Police is private property?? Oh wait, no…. nowadays, it’s “CITY PROPERTY”, right? The cop obviously hasn’t been studying his Communist terminology lately.

You know, that reminds me, I was watching the new Poltergeist movie the other day (which sucked by the way) and this one scene pissed me off where the family was looking at a new house and the realtor told them that the outside area was not their property but “CITY PROPERTY”.

    Unfrigginbelievable!!!

I just yelled at the screen and said, “IT’S PUBLIC PROPERTY, YOU BITCH!!! There’s no such thing as ‘City Property’ “.

Anyways, these cops can kiss my ass, for all I care.

  4. Your missing the key point of this encounter; as well as other recent ones. Homeland wants police to report these encounters as they are happening; so can respond and identify.

    1. Yep. Further proof that the police and sheriffs work for and take orders from an unconstitutional corporate entity, rather than for and by We the People.

  5. “The second deputy told the man he was being detained. “Under suspicion of what crime,” the man reportedly asked. “Flying a drone,” the deputy answered.”

Since virtually EVERYTHING is a ‘crime’ these days, this would be the natural progression.

Orange County pigs are no better than L.A. County. Just as despicable.
