As Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) continues to climb in the national GOP presidential polls, so do his prospects of picking up major donors, whose big bucks could very well push him across his party’s primary finish line in 2016–donors such as casino magnate Sheldon Adelson.
Even though Trump is still at the top of the field of candidates, followed by Ben Carson and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Rubio is surging, and is making the case as to why he could be the one candidate whose message will transcend political, ethnic, and racial lines.
Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson is on the verge of backing Rubio, as is hedge fund manager Paul Singer.
These are huge gets for Rubio, who already has the support of billionaire car dealer William Braman in Miami.
Braman has been supporting Rubio since he was in the Florida state House of Representatives, and his wife Jeanette, is currently working for his non-profit as a consultant.
So how close are Rubio and Adelson getting?
Well, considering that Adelson has a soft spot for Israel, and Rubio’s hawkish foreign policy positions have Israel’s best interest in mind, I guess it is fair to say that the two have something very much in common. Politico reports:
Rubio and Adelson have grown increasingly close, with the senator phoning the billionaire several times a month to provide in-depth updates on the state of his campaign. The two men also have detailed policy discussions, especially about international affairs and Israel–the latter a cause near and dear to the mogul. Adelson has long looked favorably on Rubio, a fellow son of immigrants. Two people familiar with his thinking said he has become increasingly confident in the senator’s political skills and believes he is the kind of fresh face the Republican Party needs in 2016.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, this is not good news for Jeb Bush, who was the establishment Republican favorite in the race, but is increasingly losing that hold to Rubio.
And remember this: if it comes down to Rubio vs. Trump, Trump will have his own casino millions of dollars to play with.
