An oil sheen can been seen floating on waters covering an oilfield in Cameron Parish in southwest Louisana Set. 15, 2008. Think Progress – by EMILY ATKIN

The Louisiana parish of Plaquemines is taking on a group of oil and gas giants including BP and Chevron for allegedly dumping toxic waste — some of it radioactive — from their drilling operations into its coastal waters, according to a lawsuit removed to federal court on Thursday.

Plaquemines Parish is claiming the companies violated the Louisiana State and Local Coastal Resources Management Act of 1978 by discharging oil field waste directly into the water “without limitation.” Worse, the companies allegedly failed to clear, revegetate, detoxify or restore any of the areas they polluted, as required by state law. The oil and gas companies’ pollution, along with their alleged failure to adequately maintain their oilfields, has caused significant coastal erosion and contaminated groundwater, the lawsuit said.   Continue reading “BP, Chevron Accused Of Illegally Dumping Toxic Radioactive Drilling Waste Into Louisiana Water”

Since time began for human beings, we have relied on our senses, particularly eyes to relay the light and shadows from which we ‘decode’ visual reality through the Pineal Gland to the brain. We also decode sounds, feelings, tastes and smells from which the brain then creates ’concepts’ we can express in language, music and art.

In the world of TV and cinema this decoding is known as pictorial semiotics.   Continue reading “SPIN. The ‘Slant’ or Direction News Media’s Spin Doctors Want You Pointed Toward? Think Again.”

Smileys, also known as “emoticons,” are glyphs used to convey emotions in your writing. They are a great way to brighten up posts. smile emoticon

Text smileys are created by typing two or more punctuation marks. Type the smileys without the spaces between the : and the other punctuation marks or it will not work.  (I had to put the spaces in to show you what to type or it would just show the smiley faces and you would not know what to type.)

Some examples are:   Continue reading “What Text Do I Type to Make Smileys?”

An old prospector shuffled into the town of El Indio , Texas leading an old tired mule.  The old man headed straight for the only saloon in town, to clear his parched throat.  He walked up to the saloon and tied his old mule to the hitch rail.

As he stood there, brushing some of the dust from his face and clothes, a young gunslinger stepped out of the saloon with a gun in one hand and a bottle of whiskey in the other.

A few days ago a friend forwarded the missive you see here, a note sent from a student to a West Mesquite High School teacher named Jennifer Davis. He was passing it along, said this friend, because he thought it was “pretty cool,” a touching thank-you that became its own little gift at this most wonderful time of the year.

Davis has given us permission to share it with the OK of her Algebra I student, 16-year-old Shayla Godbey. Says Davis, what made this missive most unexpected was its author: “Like she says,” Davis offers, “she’s not my most talkative of students.”   Continue reading “Read the thank-you note from a student that gave a West Mesquite High School teacher goosebumps”

My name is Rana. I have lived in the city of Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip all twenty-one years of my life. What is happening in Gaza is not fiction but a bitter reality, which we lack the means to defend ourselves against. In the last few days, an unusually powerful storm has flooded many areas, displacing hundreds of residents from their homes. Children are without shelter from the cold and rain. Entire neighborhoods are sinking.

My family and I spent four days in darkness in below freezing weather: no electricity, no water, and no heat. I was so cold, I couldn’t leave my bed and the small comfort it and my blankets provided. The cold felt like it penetrated my bones. Yet, I am lucky. I witnessed many people as they became homeless, their children desperate for food and warmth.    Continue reading “Israel opened the gates to two dams. Now Gaza is sinking”

CAIVANO, Italy (AP) – On Ciro Fusco’s farm in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, police swooped down one recent day and planted a warning sign in his broccoli fields, prohibiting any one from harvesting or even setting foot on the plot. Dozens of other fields in the area were sequestered in the same way. Decades of toxic waste dumping by the Camorra crime syndicate that dominates the Naples area poisoned wells, authorities have found in recent months, tainting the water that irrigates crops with high levels of lead, arsenic and the industrial solvent tetrachloride.   Continue reading “Mafia toxic waste dumping poisons Italy farmlands”
