(CNN) – A gunman carrying “a large amount of ammunition” and apparent makeshift explosives killed two workers at a busy Columbia, Maryland, mall before turning a shotgun on himself, police said.

The shooting, which also left five others injured, capped a violent week which saw shootings or gun scares at American schools or shopping centers — ordinary places where people once felt safe.   Continue reading “Police: Maryland Mall Shooter Also Carried Crude Explosives Made From Fireworks”

A national newspaper chain never intended to create a multi-state database of gun owners with permits allowing them to carry concealed weapons according to its top executive, who told FoxNews.com a “poorly crafted” internal memo erroneously indicated such an idea was being planned.

The memo — sent by a top content editor to various editors at Civitas Media, which owns about 100 newspapers in 11 states, with 1.6 million in total circulation — laid out a plan for an enterprise project that would use public information requests to establish the database. But Civitas President and CEO Michael Bush, in an email after FoxNews.com reported the story on Friday, stated that the memo should not have been sent and that the notion of such a project had been “rejected” upon consideration.    Continue reading “Newspaper boss says gun permit database idea was misfire”

The debate Edward Snowden envisioned when he revealed the extent of National Security Agency (NSA) spying on Americans has taken a bad turn. Instead of a careful examination of what the NSA does, the legality of its actions, what risks it takes for what gains, and how effective the agency has been in its stated mission of protecting Americans, we increasingly have government officials or retired versions of the same demanding — quite literally — Snowden’s head and engaging in the usual fear-mongering over 9/11. They have been aided by a chorus of pundits, columnists, and present as well as former officials offering bumper-sticker slogans like “If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear,” all the while claiming our freedom is in direct conflict with our security.   Continue reading “You Can’t Opt Out : 10 NSA Myths Debunked”

Speaking at the United States Conference of Mayors on Friday, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said the approximately 11 million people who are in the country illegally have “earned the right to be citizens.”

“An earned path to citizenship for those currently present in this country is a matter of, in my view, homeland security to encourage people to come out from the shadows,” said Johnson, in what he remarked was one of his first public speeches since being confirmed as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) chief in December.   Continue reading “Homeland Security Secretary: Illegals Have ‘Earned Right to be Citizens’”

Those who have been delaying moving their retirement funds out of the system on the account of early withdrawal taxes may want to take notice.

There’s a very important back-story that no one is reporting,” stated this source. “Understanding what’s happening behind the scenes will put things into a certain perspective, and it’s a perspective from which nightmares are born,” he added.   Continue reading “Threats at Sochi expose “a larger agenda,” says intelligence source”

A popular metal used in mobile phones, wedding rings, light bulbs, computers and various other consumer products has been linked in a new study to increasing the risk of stroke. Researchers from the University of Exeter in the U.K. observed a direct association between tungsten levels in the blood and stroke risk, meaning that participants with the highest levels of the heavy metal in their systems were also the most prone to developing the circulatory condition.

To draw these conclusions, the team collected and analyzed data on more than 8,600 Americans between the ages of 18 and 74, all of whom provided urine samples to test for tungsten. Over the course of 11 years, these same individuals were assessed for stroke risk in comparison with their respective tungsten levels to see if there is any correlation between the two.   Continue reading “Exposure to heavy metal tungsten increases chances of stroke”
