Washington (AFP) – In some of its sharpest criticism to date, Washington accused Moscow on Friday of “undermining” the global order by supporting rebels in eastern Ukraine.

Germany and France also demanded that a crumbling Ukraine truce be “fully respected,” but the words appeared hollow as pro-Russian rebels celebrated a battlefield victory in the strategic town of Debaltseve.   Continue reading “Russia ‘undermining’ global world order: US”

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Convicted of extortion and illegal gambling, Savannah’s former police chief will continue to collect a pension worth nearly $130,000 a year while he serves 7 ½ years in federal prison.

That comes to more than $970,000 before taxes.

Some City Council members have called for revoking or slashing the retirement benefits of former Savannah-Chatham County Police Chief Willie Lovett, who was sentenced by a U.S. District Court judge earlier this month. But City Attorney Brooks Stillwell told council members Thursday a state law that forces convicted public employees to surrender a chunk of their pensions can’t be applied to the ex-chief.   Continue reading “Convicted Georgia police chief to collect pension in prison”

Hundreds of people in Dubai were evacuated from one of the world’s tallest residential buildings on Saturday when fire swept through The Torch, a 79-story skyscraper, residents said.

Dubai’s police chief, General Khamis Mattar, said the fire appeared to be the result of an accident and did not suspect it was caused by any deliberate criminal act, in comments carried by state news agency WAM.

He added that an investigation had started to determine the cause of the blaze, WAM reported.   Continue reading “Hundreds evacuated after fire at Dubai skyscraper”

The modern day gluten-free mania and marketing is creating a backlash. People who are sick of it fall back on “inconclusive” studies or dismiss gluten concerns altogether. Unfortunately, gluten-free fare is often filled with junk ingredients, which creates more distrust.

Many trending diets have cut grains altogether; others say that’s throwing the baby out with the bathwater. While Paleo cuts out the whole food group, organizations likeWeston A. Price recommend avoiding all refined products and using traditional methods of fermentation and soaking. Books like Wheat Belly and Grain Brain aptly scrutinized the genetic engineering and other issues – via radiation – that mutates the product willy-nilly. It’s true, most of today’s grain products bear decreasing resemblance to our great-grandfather’s food.    Continue reading “Discovery of Another Major Problem with Modern Bread”

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — International investigators have been trying to use social media to prevent three missing London schoolgirls from joining ISIS in Syria, as President Barack Obama says it is crucial to shut down the propaganda machine that is attracting recruits.

As CBS2 Political Reporter Marcia Kramer reported, many have said it is impossible to underestimate the success of the sophisticated and slickly produced propaganda that Islamic State militants have used to attract people from all over the world to join their war machine and commit barbaric atrocities.   Continue reading “Calls Mount For Shutdown Of ISIS Propaganda Machine As London Girls Vanish”

Breaking point: The officials at Lampedusa airport (pictured) are struggling to process the 1,200 newly arrived migrants in a reception centre built for a third of that number - and now Islamic State has threatened to send 500,000 to Europe's shores Yalibnan

ISIS has threatened to flood Europe with half a million migrants from Libya in a ‘psychological’attack against the West, it was claimed today.

Transcripts of telephone intercepts published in Italy claim to provide evidence that ISIS is threatening to send 500,000 migrants simultaneously out to sea in hundreds of boats in a ‘psychological weapon’ against Europe if there is military intervention against them in Libya.

Many would be at risk of drowning with rescue services unable to cope. But authorities fear that if numbers on this scale arrived, European cities could witness riots.   Continue reading “ISIS threatens to flood Europe with 500,000 migrants from Libya”

Official Greek deposit data began tumbling in December (outflows around EUR3bn), and accelerated in January in the run up to the Syriza election (proxied by JPMorgan at over EUR 12bn). During the last two weeks, however, the absence of ATM lines and visible bank runs has been curiously lacking as, at least on the surface, there appears to be no panic. However, as Dody Tsiantar reports, sources in the Greek banking sector have told Greek newspapers that as much as EUR 25bn euros have left Greek banks since the end of December with outflows surging this week. Perhaps they are getting anxious that authorities will take Cypriot advantage of the Bank Holiday that is planned in Greece on Monday.   Continue reading “Greek Deposit Run Accelerates Ahead Of Monday’s Bank Holiday”

It’s no surprise that American drug companies routinely mark up prices of medications way above the real cost, but the price of a new life-saving medication is dizzying.

The pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences sells sofosbuvir, marketed as Sovaldi, as a new cure for the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The results have reportedly lived up to the clinical testing.   Continue reading “Drug Company Charges $84,000 For Drug That Costs Less Than $200 To Make”

Office of Earl BlumenauerReason – by Jacob Sullum

Today Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) and Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) introduced bills that would legalize and tax marijuana at the federal level. Polis’ Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act (H.R. 1013) would remove marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Subsrances Act and assign regulatory authority to the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Shipping cannabis into states where it is prohibited would remain illegal. Blumenauer’s Marijuana Tax Revenue Act (H.R. 1014) would impose an excise tax on the first sale of marijuana (generally from a grower to a processor); the rate, initially 10 percent, would rise gradually to 25 percent. The tax would not apply to medical marijuana.   Continue reading “Congressmen Introduce Bills to Legalize and Tax Marijuana”

With its deep cuts to higher education, Medicaid, pension benefits, and social services, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget is being called “reckless,” “heartless,” and “morally reprehensible.”

Rauner, who won a decisive victory over incumbent Gov. Pat Quinn in November, announced his budget plan before the Illinois General Assembly earlier this week. It lays out $6 billion in cuts in state spending on universities, health care, and local governments while calling for sharply reducing pension benefits for state workers—in keeping with Rauner’s recent attacks on public sector unions.   Continue reading “Austerity in Illinois?
