Iraq Will Need Additional US Assistance, Obama Says

President Barack Obama said Thursday Iraq will need more help from the United States as it seeks to push back a violent Islamic insurgency that has captured two key cities and is vowing to press toward Bagdad.

Obama did not specify what type of assistance the U.S. would be willing to provide, but said he had not ruled out any options.

“We do have a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold in either Iraq or Syria, for that matter,” Obama said during an Oval Office meeting with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Iraq has been beset by violence since the last American forces withdrew in late 2011. The violence escalated this week with an al-Qaida-inspired group capturing two key Sunni-dominated cities this week and vowing to march on to Baghdad.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other Iraqi leaders have pleaded with the Obama administration for more than a year for additional help to combat the growing insurgency, which has been fueled by the unrelenting civil war in neighboring Syria. Northern Iraq has become a way station for insurgents who routinely travel between the two countries and are seeding the Syrian war’s violence in Baghdad and beyond.

A senior U.S. official said the U.S. is considering whether to conduct drone missions for Iraq but that no decision had been made. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter by name and requested anonymity.

The president said he was watching the situation in with concern and his team was working around the clock to identify the most effective assistance. He said that while short-term military solutions were required to tamp down the growing insurgency, Iraq also needed to make longer-term political changes.

  1. Well, of course! They need to transfer those troops that they are withdrawing from Afghanistan someplace else now, don’t they? Can’t bring them home because we have an illegal immigrant force invading our country by the plane load and that would just mess things up for Barry and the elite if trained soldiers were sent home to defend their homeland before Barry and the elite finish taking over it.

  2. Exactly NC….they just sent 400 more Oregon National Guard to the middle east.. I need say no more you know.

  3. The people in Iraq have no will to fight. The Iraq gov. wants them to so they can stay in power. The equipment we left there is now in the bad guys hands… If we go in and destroy that equipment, do then turn around and give the Iraq gov more equipment??? never ends on this one…You cannot free a people that do not want to be free…. Sort of like Free cell phones…..

  4. When are we going to reach the snapping point? We must bring these criminals in the government to justice. Immediately, before they do any more harm. Surely there are more than sufficient grounds for this.

  5. Aren’t those ISIS militiamen armed with the weapons Barry sent to the brave, democracy loving, human organ noshing (oops, shouldn’t have mentioned that) freedom fighters trying to overthrow the Syrian tyrant because he would not let them slaughter the Syrian Christians.
In fact I have heard some crazy conspiracy theorists suggest a lot of the ISIS fighters are the same people as Assad just trounced in Syria.
We seem to be going round in circles.

  6. ISIS are the FUKUS (France UK USa) trained and backed terrorists sent into syria to kill the christians to create an excuse to invade while pleasing the christian-hating jews.

although they may not be what your seeing in iraq.
in both iraq and lybia the people have been fighting back since day1 of being invaded.

    think about this:
if you were a religious fighter fighting against the enemy of your religion,
    would you:
A: go kill muslims and christians in iraq.
    or
B: go kill the talmudic filth in israel for murdering muslim and christian palastinians every day!

  7. Those speaking on above comments about this being much about slaughtering the Christians, in my opinion, are 100% correct…Where are the U.S. churches? they are worshiping joel ostein…
