Those front line dogs are on a tight leash. If they get caught trying to take even the slightest whiff of freedom, they will be yanked back on their choke chains and beaten by their masters within inches of their lives as an example to all the others. The people facing them have no clue who they are trying to win over to the side of freedom. It is all falling on dead ears. That’s right. I said “dead”, not deaf.
Now do something useful like channeling those tears into rage. Begging the aggressor for mercy and leniency is unbecoming and feckless.
