Living In A “See Something, Say Something” World

imagesSo today I just got fired from my job because the trainer at my company and a new girl decided to snitch on me because I was frustrated with a sales order that I was forced to take the other day which I had no training and no experience in handling and management told me to just go with it. So mind you, I’m a regular worker and not a new hire and this order would cost both the company and the customer thousands of dollars if it was handled incorrectly. So why would you allow someone who was never trained on how to handle it, to take the order and tell him to just “go with it”?

In any case, I got frustrated as any sane person would and said, “Ugh! I could just shoot someone right now”.

Now, any “normal” person would see that I was frustrated and was just making a comment out of frustration and obviously it wasn’t to be taken seriously. Apparently, the two women (in a male dominated, blue collar profession, mind you), who were the trainer and her trainee, overheard it and one of them told me, “you shouldn’t say shoot someone. That’s not nice. Say hit something, but not shoot someone”. I just looked at them and said, “Whatever, I’m frustrated here”.

In any case, rather than leaving it as is, I’m pretty sure they decided to take it upon themselves to speak with the Human Resources Manager about it because he then called me into his office today. He stated that someone said, I got frustrated and wanted to shoot someone and asked me why I felt the need to say that because he would never say that and he felt it was a very serious concern that I would say something like that.

I was shocked and told him it was taken way out of context and that people say things out of frustration all the time. He told me that when he got frustrated, he would never say that (maybe because he’s a good little sheep) and that he has never heard anyone say that before and would feel “threatened by it” (yes, those were his words).

I just looked at him and laughed and said, “Really? I hear people say that all the time. It’s no big deal. People get frustrated and say things. It doesn’t mean they are going to go out and do it. People get frustrated. That’s life.”

Seriously, in all my years of working, if I had a dime for every time I heard someone say what I said out of frustration, both in America and overseas, I’d be a rich man. So this guy is full of shit and a coward.

So anyways, he explains in a Big Brother tone that this is serious and that he has never heard anyone say that before and it was unheard of to him and he wanted to make sure the workplace was safe.

This guy is slightly older than me and to have him not hear frustrated comments like that in his entire life is bullshit!

So I just laughed it off and said, “You know, this “see something, say something” thing is way out of hand, not to be political or anything”.

He obviously didn’t like my little comment, and at that point said, “You know what, this is not how I was hoping this would go, so give me your employee badge. I’m terminating your employment.”

So he fires me.

Now maybe I shouldn’t have made that comment, but it needed to be said, as it is becoming all too common everywhere and in the workplace these days and I also have one thing to say about all of this and that is how pathetic our country has become. We have become a nation of spineless cowards if we are so DAMN afraid of every little thing someone says. If we have become a nation of scared kittens and spies, then I don’t know what country I’m living in anymore, because it sure as hell is NOT the America I grew up in.

When you get fired for making a comment out of frustration without even a written or verbal warning, then I don’t know what to say anymore.

I have never been fired or arrested in my entire life and have always been a straight arrow. After coming back from Asia, I have been beaten, tased, arrested and fired for the most ridiculous things imaginable. I don’t know what the hell happened while I was away, but this is NOT America. This is not freedom. This is slavery, injustice, torture and humiliation.

I get arrested for exercising my 4th Article Rights and get fired for exercising my 1st Article Rights. Maybe American companies should start setting up 1st Amendment zones in the workplace like they did at Bundy’s Ranch. Maybe we should all just give up our freedoms and live a life of slavery, never saying anything and keeping our mouths shut and taking it up the ass like good little slaves.

Well, I’M NOT A SLAVE!!!! I AM A LIVING, BREATHING, HUMAN BEING!! I will NOT be told what I can and cannot say and I will NOT be told how to live my own life!

So if people want to go around snitching and playing the “see something, say something” game, rather than dealing with it themselves, then they may as well crawl under a rock and live out the rest of their days there living a life of fear, because they obviously can’t handle living in the REAL world!

  1. Sorry to hear about that NC, but I’m glad you stood up for yourself. Now they will probably replace you with a two time felon so they can get a tax break and he can say and do what he wants and nothing will happen.

  2. When someone pays you a salary to do business with their customers you are their slave. You’ve gotta either learn to suck it up, keep your mouth shut and play the good little submissive human resource for them or…

You can tell the corporations to go f#@k themselves and work for yourself and do business directly with your customers. Then you call the shots to a much greater degree. I know guys that won’t do business with someone or a company for their politics or anti-gun sentiments etc. They would rather lose out on a deal no matter how big than sacrifice their core values. So in essence they call all the shots. There’s not many people in the world that have the guts to do this. Almost everyone is a greedy SOB and will sell out for the cash.

    Choose wisely.

  3. I’m so sorry to hear you lost your job today NC. It sounds like you and I are from the same generation. These companies hire people and expect them to do their job from day one without training them to do their job the way management would like to see it efficiently done. Everyone knows when they are hired, there is always a few weeks of on the job specialized training no matter if you’ve done the job before or not. I hate that this is a “buyers market” for employers when so many people are needing to hang onto their jobs.

This happened also to my daughter when she developed a blood clot in her leg and ended up in the hospital for 7 days. Her employer called her and told her not to return to work because “they hired someone to fill her position and they had to move on”. Say what? Unbelievable!! Now she has all these medical bills she cannot pay because she has no job.

I too have been in your shoes in the past NC. It seems like I don’t even know, much less understand, where people are coming from anymore. It feels like I live in a totally different country or another planet even because I think so differently from them.

That just makes me sad to hear your story. What will you do now? I pray you will be okay and land on your feet … so to speak.
    . . .

  4. NC, I am so sorry that the spineless thing that calls himself a man, fired you. I truly am. I don’t work in a “normal” company, we are self employed and we don’t have to see the people we work with everyday, so I know if I did it would kill me. Reading your story I felt like I was reading an excerpt from the book “1984”. So to answer your question what happened to our country while you were away, everybody went to sleep, they were enticed with TV, fast food, fast money, big houses, nice cars, and promises of the good life, etc.

Now as all the people were pacified, 9/11 happened, and you know the rest. Again I am truly sorry. Please know that when God closes one door, he will open another door, Keep the Faith!! I will pray that you find a better job working with better people!!

  5. If you get a jumped up little twat on an obvious power trip who has been activated because of a couple of indoctrinated little weasels looking for brownie points with the management mentions something to him, then as hard as it is, suck it up, let him know he is the boss and there is nothing to worry about. Also let them know you feel safer at how they have handled the situation because they would more than likely be able to spot a nut the way he has handled this! I know this sucks but it is job survival 101 in an orwellian climate!
When the heat is off you, look for REVENGE!

  6. .
He’s an ass, and you are right….
you are better off away from those cowardly morons…

    it’s unfortunate.

  7. Yep, like Missy said above – just like “1984” to be sure.
    Yes guys 1984 is here. 👿 🙁 😉

  8. Thanks guys. 🙁

Mind you, I also forgot to mention that I was eligible for employee of the month this month and this trainer never received employee of the month out of the few years that she has been there. So yea, evidently that doesn’t mean anything or hold any weight to the Human Resources manager, but my frustrated statement does. Go figure.

    1. Sounds to me like the trainer was jealous of you. Well, like Missy says, God will open a new and better door for you.
      . . .

  9. That sucks, and as doesn’t sound like you will get a great reference would have asked hr nitwit what is the companies legal firm so your lawyer can get in touch with them, just for a few grins, keep em a little nervous!

  10. A SEE a Fascist Police State. I SAY “Armed Citizens and a Fascist Police State cannot coexist.”

  11. Are you a Vet? You said you just got back from Asia… If so, hit up one of those Ambulance Chasing Attorneys and hit them with the PTSD angle. Sounds awful, but it does offer some protection… after all if you were in a ‘special protected class’ you wouldn’t have been railroaded. If you were gay, transgendered, or whatever, you’d still have a job.

Sure hate you got fired. Me? As soon as the badge hit the desk I would have told him EXACTLY what I thought of him (provided no witnesses were around)

  12. I worked 45+ years in at least ten different companies, two of them twice. There wasn’t a single job that didn’t have several ass kissers all through the work area, some just plain spies paid to snitch to the boss. This boss in this article isn’t really new, just using different tactics to keep the sheep under control.I used to just try and ignore the creeps who spied and sucked up to management the best i could. It doesn’t take long to figure out who these people are. Some of us would tell these spies some really nasty B.S. and they would take it straight to their supervisor. The daily work environment may have changed now from what i new years ago.

  13. wow — real sorry you got fired, NC.

Especially over a political correctness issue.

That sux. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you find work again right away. (or as soon as you want to)

  14. I remember back in 2010 when I got hired at Dollar Tree after Thanksgiving. After I applied, I was hired and on the day before I started working, the store manager was telling me conflicted work schedules. My supervisor, who was the merchandise manager, was a ghetto gossiping woman, didn’t like that I didn’t want to call in every Monday to find out my work schedule. She didn’t want to hardly schedule me for work.

Since I was against calling every Monday to find out my schedule, I called her to talk about my schedule, and she sounded rude over the phone, to give the store manager the impression that I was rude to her, which I wasn’t. Next thing I know he terminated me over the phone.

This position was a Overnight Stocking Associate position.

The reason why I think the merchandise manager act the way she acted is because she didn’t want to schedule me for work, & that I was attending university, also was hired w/o an interview (because of my statement on why I wanted to work there), and didn’t want to contact the store on Mondays to find out my work schedule. I never did call on a Monday. I was against that “policy” the time I heard it.

I even asked for her phone number, so I can keep in contact with her about my schedule, she didn’t give it to me. I was thinking why should I call the store on Mondays, when the managers that work the day shifts don’t have anything to do with my schedule. They don’t know me from man on the moon. She was a night manager, she should have been telling me my schedule. She would schedule other employees, but didn’t want to schedule me. It didn’t make sense for me to contact the store every Monday to find out my work schedule. She knew I was a good employee (meaning I did my job), but I wasn’t going to put up with the BS with scheduling. I only worked about 2-3 weekends before I was terminated in early December.

See, I’ve always been an outcast, and when I’m a workplace and the manager want me to follow a “policy” that I know is unreasonable, I’m just not going to do it. I can play a “good slave” to a certain extent. I’ve never been the one to make friends on the job, or to kiss ass. Frankly, my character is too strong to be working for someone else.

This was back in 2010, and that was before I became aware of the corruption in today’s society. Now, since I’ve became a helluva lot more aware, if for some reason I find myself working in a slave job, I would be more exposing of company policies than I were back then. I have boycotted Dollar Tree since my termination. Also, I figured that both the store manager/merchandise manager wasn’t any good from the beginning.

Another note on the scheduling. The flexible scheduling on the job is no good. From my experience with my first hire at Dollar Tree, the managers abuse the hell out of scheduling employees. The slaves that managers like best get the best/most scheduling; other workers that managers like least gets the least/worst scheduling. I think it’s best to work a fixed schedule, but I think flexible is good for college students as long as they have good managers.

Now, I see job applications online that want you to waive “your” (strawman) rights where the “corporate entity” waive up zilch. It’s probably been like that all along since applications have been online. For example, you can’t hold your former employers liable for what they say about your past work history and performance if you apply at Whole Foods. What BS.

Last, but not least, the biggest issue that I see with the corporate slave contract is the “at will” termination. Of course, it’s heavily abused and it protects and cover the CEOs asses. It’s the equivalent to the 0-tolerance policy in schools where students get arrested for petty stuff students shouldn’t be arrested for.

  15. That totally sucks, NC.

But you have to remember the gun taboo mania that’s going on. Anything even remotely resembling a gun is a crime now, so by logical extension, talking about guns or shooting them would be taboo (read criminal) as well.

    1. Very true. 🙁
NC, I am mind boggled ….
Gee… What would they have they done if you had pointed your finger and shot yourself in the head (as many of us use to/still do, to show frustration/stupidity)?
I am so VERY Sorry that this happened to you (of all places, I can’t believe it happened in TX 🙁 ) Totally Ridiculous!
