ASBURY PARK — One man was killed and another is in extremely critical condition in an attempted murder-suicide that occurred Thursday afternoon in broad daylight on a public street in Asbury Park, authorities said.
A 30-year-old city man was shot in the head by a 20-year-old man who later turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger as police officers ordered him to drop the weapon, said First Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Marc LeMieux.
The shooting occurred outside a home at 1230 First Ave. where the younger man stayed occasionally, LeMieux said. He said the two knew each other and had an ongoing dispute.
The victim, with a bullet wound to his head, flagged down an Asbury Park police officer stationed at a construction job near Asbury Avenue at 12:37 p.m., LeMieux said.
Tipped off to the shooting location by the victim, police and members of the prosecutor’s office went to the First Avenue house, where they found the alleged shooter on an outside porch, LeMieux said.
As police approached, the 20-year-old man put a gun to his head and in a matter of 10 to 15 seconds pulled the trigger and fatally shot himself, LeMieux said.
“They yelled ‘Drop the gun! Drop the gun! And he just pulled the trigger,” LeMieux said.
The 30-year-old man was in “extremely critical condition” at a local hospital, LeMieux said.
He would not release the identities of either man.
The incident occurred on the same block as Our Lady of Mount Carmel School and about five blocks from the spot where Neptune police Sgt. Seidle, according to authorities, tracked down his ex-wife and shot her to death on June 16 on Sewall Avenue. After the shooting, Seidle pointed the gun at his head for nearly an hour before a barrage of police officers eventually convinced him to drop the weapon.
Anyone with information in Thursday’s shooting is asked to call prosecutor’s Detective Scott Samis at 800-533-7443 or Asbury Park Detective Steven Ramseur at 732-502-4587.

For once, the pigs didn’t kill (or even shoot) someone, apparently.
