Luxury yacht ‘Baden’ capsized after a failed launch in Anacortes, WAMSN Money – CNBC

A $10 million, 90-foot yacht was being launched in Washington state when it suddenly capsized.

The yacht, named Baden (pictured), had already been lowered into the water in Anacortes, Wash., when it slowly tilted and then sank, according to media reports.

The cause of last month’s accident is under investigation, but New World Yacht Builders, which built the yacht under the Northern Marine brand, said the problem appeared to be in the launch apparatus, not with the boat.

“The physical evidence on, and adjacent to, the launch ramp suggests that the dolly carrying the weight of the port stern of the yacht may have suddenly dropped off the edge of the boat ramp during the launch, causing the vessel to experience a sudden list to port, from which it could not recover in its light condition for launch,” Northern Marine said in a press release.

YouTube video from YachtVid shows someone at the launch ceremony breaking the ritual champagne bottle on the hull before the boat slid into the water.

As it entered the water, the vessel started to lean to the port side, and then quickly capsized. Six people were on board and all escaped serious injury, according to reports.

Northern Marine said it has launched more than 35 vessels at the same ramp with no previous problems. Baden is a so-called “explorer yacht,” designed more for remote expeditions than leisure.

The company added that it has “complete confidence” in its designs. According to a local media report, New World Yacht has since laid off its staff of 52 and production has been suspended.

  1. This is why you always buy a used boat, or steal one from someone else. They’re worth more after they’re proven to be sea-worthy.

“The company added that it has “complete confidence” in its designs…..has since laid off its staff of 52 and production has been suspended.”

If they have complete confidence in their designs, why did they stop production? They probably blew town too.

Damn, you beat me to it, JR. lol

  2. yes, Funny Farmer, I think you’re exactly right, and I don’t know anything about boat design either, but it seems to me that ANY boat shouldn’t have capsized out of the launch — broken or not.

    1. Hi #1,

      I agree.

It does seem like they just aren’t building, high-end, $10 million dollar yachts like the O’ days,.. are they.

  3. My Fellow Boaters:

    HAHAHAHAHaahahahahahahahahahhahaha,…..

I like the snot nose dweeb in the video asking people not to judge, and that he couldn’t, “show everything”,….. (You know,… WE’RE ALL part of the Rich, Yacht Boating community or something like that…)

Yeah,… lets summarize,…. YOU SCREWED UP!!!!

The boat went in with a Port-list which should have self correct as buoyancy provided lifting force,… instead,… as soon as she was floating,…she did a port roll, like her meta-center was way to high (meaning,.. it doesn’t seem like it was ballasted correctly.)

Somebody just got stuck with a hell of an insurance claim!

JD – US Marines – As Forest Gump said,.. “Sh*t Happens”.

I guess it’s time for them to move their factory to China for production like everyone else then. Makes me wonder if the “New World Yacht” builds boats for the elites and their “New World Order”. lol

    1. Hahaha! Nice one, Wade. Unfortunately, they only jump out of 30 story windows, but I do hear they are expanding their horizons. lol
