Trencher Alert: Angel’s husband has suffered a full cardiac arrest

We received the following email from Angel:

Early yesterday evening, Randy was sitting on the couch, I was a couple yards away at the drafting table, on my laptop, and I heard a big thud. He was the floor, still in sitting position, on his face with a pool of blood quickly forming. Totally unresponsive.

I drug him out of the tight space where his face/shoulders had fallen between the sofa and the drafting table and tried to roll him over. He started making sounds like he was choking on all the blood. Tissue, not mucus, was protruding from his nostrils.

I turned him so blood could drain and called 911. (I think he broke his nose when he fell on it) They got here quickly. Did CPR (said they found the 3 ribs he broke Oct 1st, which tells me they probably re-broke them), had to shock him 3 times (that tells me he was flat-line), used suction, and oxygen ventilator. Got him stable enough to transport to Beth Israel Hospital Emergency, not the VA.

Did a heart cath. Found several blockages. Put a stint in his RCA, 100% blocked. His left is 90-94% (couldn’t understand the Dr.’s accent) blocked and a third, smaller artery, is also 100% blocked. They are hoping to unblock the LCA on Thursday.

He is now in CCU. They are cooling him down (hypothermia) for 72 hours then will warm him up for 24 hrs. Until then, he is in an induced coma (though that’s not what they call it…when I asked point blank, that’s what it is…an induced coma), on a ventilator and all kinds of tubes. In about 3 days they’ll try to rouse him and then we’ll be able to tell what kind of damage was done to the brain due to lack of oxygen.

For now, it’s a waiting game. They said the big concerns now are what damage was done to his brain, kidneys, and liver from the lack of oxygen. They are not transferring him to the VA. Said he won’t be going anywhere for a while.

Definitely won’t be home for Christmas or his birthday (Dec. 29th). On my way back to the hospital now. Won’t have my computer with me. Will keep you posted as I can.

  1. I have lifted Randy and you both before God in prayer, and asked Him to intervene. I have asked also that He strengthen you and grant the doctors skill and wisdom to treat him properly.
When we meet with our service group tonight, we will have 6-10 people praying for you both.

  2. Words cannot express how deeply sorry I am for you & Randy, Angel.

I don’t pray often anymore these days, but for you, I will… for a complete recovery.

    Blessings, Angel. Stay strong.

  3. Angel, you are one of the first trenchers I remember seeing here on the comments when I first found the site back in 2009. I’m sorry this tragedy has found you at what is supposed to be a festive time of year. I’m hoping for a Christmas miracle, that Randy makes a full recovery. I, along with all the other good folks here at the trenches will keep you both in our thoughts and prayers.

  4. Angel, I wish your husband a speedy and total recovery, and I wish you the best of luck in dealing with this. You must be a wreck. Hang in there.

I don’t do much praying, but I will today. .

  5. Blessings and quick recovery for your man, Angel, and God bless you…used to do EKGs in CCUs and may that upside down t-wave be just a stumbling block, for Christ is with you both–from one Aggie fan to another.

  6. Thank you for telling us this very sad news, Angel.
My heart goes out to you, and your’s.
I can tell that you are focused, and on mission.
I have a lot of respect for that, ma’am!
I prayed for Randy and you before typing this, and will continue prayers.
    Be strong, Angel.

  7. I am overwhelmed with gratitude. You are each my family and I love you all very much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  8. Angel, “These are the times that try mens souls.” May you have strength and comfort during this time to rise with and above the storm.

God bless you and God speed.

  9. Very sad news, my wife and I pray for you to have the strength you need to get you through this ordeal and for Rand to make a full recovery.

      1. You’re welcome, Angel. And may love bless you both and bring the healing. I’m lighting a candle now for you and Randy. It’s flame is a light of friendship and support. God bless.

        .

  10. I wish I had a positive update. Sadly, I do not. His vitals are stable but he won’t wake up. No eye response. EEG waves don’t look good. However, the Tech. told me that he has seen worse that came out OK. Just have to wait and not lose hope. Said it’s up to him now and how much he wants to fight / how much fight he has left in him. I have to keep talking to him…stimulating him…make him fight.
    Need a Christmas Miracle.

    1. If he hears you Angel, that can mean all the difference in the world. Doctors could care less, they’re too damn busy to care, hope all the best, miracles do happen.

      1. Right now I,m on the Indiana/Ohio boarder heavy snow, I have to stick my arm out the window during the snow storm to clear my windshield wiper, my side. (huge ice build up) This while doin 70mph. Semi windshields are so big, they’re hard to keep managed in heavy snow.

Defrost doesn’t do squat to keep the blades clear.

They have heated windshield wipers, but my boss makes us pay for them, so I have to play these little games.

Much more of this and I’ll be laying right next to Randy.

        1. oh mark please please please be careful out there….watch for those crazy holiday drivers….you know…..especially the ones in those little rice rockets that think they own the road

          1. My thoughts exactly, Mary. Sometimes his driving is like some epic heroic battle through hell. At every turn an veritable obstacle appearing and offering challenge. A good thing he’s an angel and likely a master at navigation.

            🙂

            .

    2. I’ve seen miracles happen, Angel.

Praying that this is one of those times.

I won’t be around till late in the week at the earliest. The NEW charge cord already failed completely, down to 25% on this battery… one fully charged left. Cheap Chinese cr@p!

Stay strong, Angel… you have 100% support from the Trenchers, you’re not alone in this.

    3. my heart goes out to you Angel…..I have been in your shoes…..lost my first husband Jan. 14 2001……love to you

      1. Angel, In no way did I mean to imply Randy’s outcome would be the same as it was for my husband….just wanted to express how I know what you are going through, Mary
