Dollar General is conducting an investigation after a cashier called the police on a black customer using store coupons, accusing her of “trying to take advantage of the system.”

On July 18, teacher Madonna Wilburn of Buffalo, New York was trying to purchase $30 worth of groceries with digital coupons when the clerk, whom she identified as manager Ken Dudek, got frustrated. Fourteen people, including a young girl, were shot near downtown Toronto, police in Canada’s biggest city said on Sunday, with one person killed and the gunman also dead.

The young girl was in a critical condition, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders said.

A gunman who opened fire outside a Trader Joe’s in Silver Lake was in custody Saturday evening after a standoff that began when he shot two people at a South L.A. home and fled in a car. Police were not searching the store to care for bystanders who were inside.

Witness described a terrifying scene of shoppers diving for cover amid the gun battle.

Los Angeles police Asst. Chief Robert Arcos said the gunman is in the Trader Joe’s with some bystanders. Other law enforcement sources said the bystanders and the gunman appeared to be in different parts of the store.

Dr. Mark Hausknecht, a cardiologist who treated former President George H.W. Bush, was shot around 8:50 a.m. in the 6600 block of Main Street while riding his bicycle to work. Agustin Duran was pronounced dead just before 5 p.m. Sunday, a day after inmate Andres Ayon pummeled the 66-year-old at Wasco State Prison, located about 30 miles northwest of Bakersfield, prison officials said in a news release.
