Huffington Post – JASON STRAZIUSO

NAIROBI, Kenya — The website’s headlines trumpet al-Shabab’s imminent demise and describe an American jihadist fretting over insurgent infighting. At first glance it appears to be a sleek, Horn of Africa news site. But the site – sabahionline.com – is run by the U.S. military.

The site, and another one like it that centers on northwest Africa, is part of a propaganda effort by the U.S. military’s Africa Command aimed at countering extremists in two of Africa’s most dangerous regions – Somalia and the Maghreb.

Following the destruction left by Hurricane Sandy, millions of New Yorkers have been left without a roof over their head and food in their stomach. Despite the efforts by many to donate food and water, their donations aren’t all being accepted.

New York City was one of the hardest hit areas during Hurricane Sandy, and the effort to get the city back on track has been nonstop. Despite his full attention being put on the clean up effort, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is continuing his previous ban on all food donations to homeless shelters for victims of the hurricane. According to MSM Now, Bloomberg is banning the food “because the city can’t properly assess salt, fat and fiber in donated food and thereby ensure starving people are getting the optimal levels of nutrition.”

Even before the superstorm fueled by Hurricane Sandy has hit New York City in earnest Monday, parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn have experienced flooding.

At a press conference Monday morning, Governor Cuomo said the storm surge in New York is already at Hurricane Irene levels.

Bloomberg  About 30 minutes before two people were shot dead and nine were injured near New York’s Empire State Building, the mayor of America’s largest city was on the radio talking again about guns.

“It is just too many guns on the streets,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said during his weekly radio appearance today on WOR radio. “The argument, ‘Guns don’t kill people, people kill people,’ is one of the most disingenuous things you can say. It does take a person to pull the trigger.”

Huffington Post  No criminal charges will be filed against an NYPD officer accused of violently striking a New York state Supreme Court justice in the throat in an unprovoked attack earlier this summer, the Queens district attorney said Wednesday.

Judge Thomas Raffaele, who reported the alleged assault, called the DA’s decision “shocking” and accused the NYPD officers involved of lying to cover up their misconduct.

Here’s more about what he said on his Facebook page. I really don’t see what he said that was so bad.

Business Insider  The former Marine who was detained by the federal government over Facebook posts critical of the government is being held in a psychiatric ward, Peter Bacqué of the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

“I’m currently in John Randolph in the psychiatric ward being held against my will,” Brandon Raub said in a telephone interview with the Times-Dispatch. “[Authorities] were concerned about me calling for the arrest of government officials.”

Daily Comet  NEW ORLEANS — At least some of the seven people arrested in a fatal shootout with Louisiana deputies have been linked to violent anarchists on the FBI’s domestic terrorism watch lists, a sheriff said Saturday.

Detectives had been monitoring the group before Thursday’s shootout in Laplace in which two deputies were killed and two more wounded, said DeSoto Parish Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle. His detectives and other law enforcement discovered the suspects were heavily armed adherents to an ideology known as the “sovereign citizens” movement.

AOL  In the age of Facebook and Twitter, a new crime has hit America: “Sharpie parties,” gatherings of party revelers armed with “Sharpie” magic markers and lured by social media invitations to wreak havoc on foreclosed homes.

Five years into the U.S. foreclosure crisis, Sharpie parties are a new form of blight on the landscape of boarded-up homes, brown lawns and abandoned streets. They are also the latest iteration of collective home-trashing spurred by social media.

Houston Chronicle  DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer was left with a gaping hole on one side after it collided with an oil tanker early Sunday just outside the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The collision left a breach about 10 feet by 10 feet (three by three meters) in the starboard side of USS Porter. No one was injured on either vessel, the U.S. Navy said in a statement.

Huffington Post  Texas authorities executed Marvin Wilson, a 54-year-old death row inmate, on Tuesday night after his attorneys failed to convince state and federal courts that he was mentally retarded and ineligible for the death penalty under a 2002 Supreme Court ruling.

Wilson was declared dead at 6:27 p.m. local time. He cried out to his gathered family members as he expired, Texas officials said.

“Give mom a hug for me and tell her that I love her,” Wilson said.

This whole thing stinks to high heaven.

Has anyone else noticed the coincidence between Bloomberg’s new Mayors Against Guns national commercial and this latest shooting? It aired, for the first time, just a couple of hours before this shooting. Also, amongst other info. in this article, notice that they spoke to the shooter’s grandmother who lives in Littleton, Colo. Another coincidence?

Huffington Post  In April, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study linking diet soda consumption to an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease. Nobody blinked or cared because this research was just going to be thrown on the pile of allegedly conflicting studies about the safety of artificial sweeteners, particularly aspartame. This pile is referred to as the “aspartame controversy.”

Aspartame is the artificial sweetener sold under the brand names of Equal and NutraSweet. It is used commonly in diet sodas because it tastes the most like sugar, or at least that is what the people selling it say. Despite all the hype about controversy, there is no aspartame controversy. All of the aspartame-industry-sponsored research consistently concludes aspartame is safe, while the independent studies overwhelmingly find side effects and problems. Village Voice  First he came for your smokes. Then he came for your trans-fats. Then he came for your sugary drinks — and now Mayor Mike Bloomberg has your booze in his sights.

In the mayor’s latest effort to protect you from yourself, the city Health Department now plans to tackle alcohol abuse in the Big Apple, starting with a mass, 50-question telephone survey to get a handle on how serious a problem it actually is.

Given the mayor’s belief that 16 ounces of soda is all that one person should possibly be allowed to drink in one sitting, don’t be surprised if drinking a thimble of beer a week is an indicator that you have a problem — and you need some city-mandated “help” to cut out the booze.

Engadget  If we were making a list of terrifying airborne war machines, this would probably rank near the top. You certainly won’t want to be targeted by the Fire Shadow, but from the safety of a web browser, it’s impossible not to marvel at the craft’s versatility.

Manufactured by French developer MBDA, the Fire Shadow missile is designed to strike a stationary or moving object on command. But unlike some other UAVs, this ingenious rig can remain airborne for up to six hours before it’s assigned to destroy a large vehicle (and its occupants) from a nearly vertical angle of attack.
