GOSHEN — Packed into a hot, crowded conference room for a public hearing on Monday, almost two dozen speakers denounced a proposed Orange County law that would allow authorities to keep cash and other assets involved in misdemeanor drug cases once the defendant has been convicted or pleads guilty.

County Executive Steve Neuhaus held the mandatory hearing before deciding by Friday whether to sign or veto the proposal, which the Legislature passed in a 12-9 vote on Dec. 4, with all Republicans in support and all Democrats in opposition. South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham Saturday pledged unwavering support to Israel in its conflicts with Hamas and Iran and vowed that the new Republican-controlled Congress would approve legislation to re-impose sanctions on Tehran should it not agree to limitations on its nuclear arsenal.

The ObamaCare-mandated fines for not having insurance are rising in 2015 — and for the first time, will be collected by the Internal Revenue Service.

The individual requirement to buy health insurance went into effect earlier this year. A bill that would allow New Jersey municipalities to sell their public water utilities to private, for-profit corporations without putting the measure to voters is awaiting Gov. Chris Christie’s signature.

Until now, any municipality in New Jersey that sought to sell off its water system to a private bidder had to hold a public vote. The dollar’s role as the world’s reserve currency was first established in 1944 with the Bretton Woods agreement. The U.S. was able assume this role by virtue of it then having the largest gold reserves in the world.

The dollar was pegged at $35 an ounce — and freely exchangeable into gold at that rate. But by 1971, convertibility into gold was no longer viable as America’s gold resources drained away.

After a Bedouin IDF soldier was critically wounded on Wednesday by terrorist sniper fire from southern Gaza, the IDF lifted a gag order late Thursday acknowledging it has deployed Iron Dome missile defense batteries in Israel’s south.
