Border Patrol Agent Gunned Down in Texas

LYFORD, Texas — A U.S. Border Patrol agent died late Sunday night after getting shot in an attempted robbery.

Preliminary information points to the agent being off-duty and fishing with his relatives at an area near Lyford Texas, Sunday evening, Border Patrol spokesman Omar Zamora said. The area where the shooting happened appears to be a canal near Farm-Market 1420 on the southern part of Willacy County.  

On Monday morning, Willacy County Sheriff’s officials confirmed that two men had been detained following the shooting.

Preliminary information points to unknown individuals who tried to rob or carjack the family; the agent ended up getting shot, Zamora said. A second victim who is  a relative of the agent remains at a local hospital, his condition was not available. 

The National Border Patrol Council, a union that represents border patrol agents said a statement would be released today. 

The name of the agent was not released Sunday night; additional information is expected to be released Monday. Lyford is a small city that lies along Interstate 69, just 31 miles from the border with Mexico.
