A California cop blasted a police K-9 after the dog bit him, authorities said.

The Richmond officer, who isn’t the animal’s handler, fired in self-defense,police told NBC.

The dog, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, apparently escaped from a caged police cruiser about 7 a.m. on Tuesday and attacked the cop in the station’s parking lot, authorities say.

Both the officer and the K-9 were wounded in the struggle.

The officer was hospitalized with undetermined wounds, and the dog was transported to PETS Referral, an emergency care center in Berkeley, with critical injuries.

Police didn’t respond to a request for comment from the Daily News.

A PETS Referral employee said the wounded dog was transferred to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine hospital but refused to release any more information.

A hospital spokesman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

  1. With this precedent, all we need now is cops to start biting cops. OK cops, time to triple up on your steroid doses . . .

  2. The real pity here is that the dog wasnt rabid like the pig that shot him. If a citizen would have shot the same dog it would be seen as murder of a police officer!

  3. ” The officer was walking through the secured parking lot in street clothes… The injured dog, which was trained to apprehend suspects and detect drugs…”

The cop was bitten on the hand.

The dog obviously recognized a _____ and went after a Crook. Too bad he didn’t go for the throat.

  4. So how come the police officer wasn’t charged with shooting a police officer, since they claim that police dogs are now the equivalent of a police officer?

If you or I did this, we would never see the light of day. Yea, I see how it is.

      1. The double standard at work yet again! Heck, they can even shoot and kill each other with no consequences, “training accidents”. . . .

  5. One would think that there would be a secret universal word or command that would automatically stop the attack mode. And this command would be known only by the officers themselves. Sounds like the dog trainers could use a little training themselves to have overlooked such a necessity.

  6. I bet the cops hand smelled like drugs ,, so the dog did it’s job.. that cop shouldn’t be doing drugs on the job..
drug test that cop and prove me wrong, until than this is what i will believe , and everyone else should too
