Press TVFormer US secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s recent admission of being wrong to vote for the war on Iraq as senator is an attempt to win the public opinion for the 2016 US presidential election, a political analyst tells Press TV.
“She wants to remove debris from her path to the White House in two years,” Franklin Lamb, an international lawyer, said in an interview with Press TV.
Lamb said Clinton made the admission because she sees a shift in the US public opinion over the past six years. “So, public opinion is moving. These political actors are responding to historic events on the ground,” Lamb said.
He further rejected Clinton’s remarks in 2008 when she claimed that the US had won the war for the Iraqi people in “only five years.”
“We didn’t win the war for the Iraqi people, they are still suffering and we didn’t win the war for Americans. That’s clear. So, to keep that from coming back to haunting her in two years’ time she is taking that off the table. Hopefully, off the table,” the commentator pointed out.
The analyst’s comments came after the former US secretary of state described her 2002 Senate vote authorizing the war in Iraq as “wrong” amid strong speculation that she is preparing to run for president in 2016.
The vote to authorize military action in Iraq pitted Clinton against the Democratic Party’s anti-war activist base in the 2008 presidential primaries.
In 2003, the US and Britain invaded Iraq in blatant violation of international law and under the pretext of finding WMDs. But no such weapons were ever discovered in Iraq.
More than one million Iraqis were killed as the result of the US-led invasion and subsequent occupation of the country, according to the California-based investigative organization Project Censored.
