Florida Democrats Push For More Gun Control

Shark Tank – by Javier Manjarres

It took less than week into the new year for Florida Democratic lawmakers to file legislation banning sales and the possession of “assault weapons” and the high capacity magazines that are tethered to them.

The Democrats:

Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith-(HB 167)

Sens Linda Stewart and Gary Farmer-(SB 254)

On the same day the bills were filed, Florida House Democratic Leader Janet Cruz backed Gov. Rick Scott’s recent $5.8 million effort to beef up counterterrorism measures throughout the state, but added that she hoped see “meaningful reforms that keep weapons from falling into the hands of dangerous criminals,” come up for discussion.

“I share Governor Scott’s commitment to ensuring that our law enforcement community has the resources necessary for counterterrorism to ensure that another tragedy like the massacre at Pulse nightclub never occurs again. While this critical investment will allow the state to better monitor and prevent acts of terror, it is my hope this is one part of a conversation about passing meaningful reforms that keep weapons from falling into the hands of dangerous criminals and those suffering from mental illness who seek to inflict violence upon Floridians.”-Rep. Janet Cruz (D)

Cruz’s statement translates into gun control. This gun control fight between Republicans and Democrats will continue throughout the 2017 legislative session, but the end result will most likely favor the pro-gun lobby. Remember, the Florida Legislature is Republican-led.
