Clackamas County, Ore. (CBS SEATTLE) – An Oregon woman who was threatened with eviction if she did not remove the American flag from her front window has now been asked to place the “colored drape” on a flag pole.

Elodia Royce, 58, received a notice two weeks ago that she would face eviction after a neighbor complained to the landlord about the “colored drape” placed in her window. But the “colored drape” is an American flag she has displayed for six years in support of herfamily and friends who have served in the military,KGW-TV reports.

“They fought for our freedoms and this is a freedom I should have,” Royce told KGW. “My grandfather, aunts and uncles served. My ex-husband served in Desert Storm and his entire family are military folks.”

She noted that her apartment manager had approved the flag when she moved into the complex six years before.

“I called the office and told her it was not a drape,” Royce said. “It’s the American flag.”

The notice from the landlord said that if the nation’s flag – labeled a “colored drape” — is not removed by Monday, she could be evicted.

“I asked if I could put it out on a pole and she said no, but when I asked if I could hang it in my window she told me OK,” said Royce.

But the eviction notice from her Happy Valley complex landlord said that “all colored drapes need to be removed from the windows,” said Royce.

But the lease agreement did not mention anything about the U.S. flag.

The grandmother of nine has two family members living in the same apartment complex, and said that while she hates conflict, she refuses to back down from displaying the U.S. flag.

On Monday, Cascade Rental Management offered her a compromise on the day she was otherwise threatened with eviction. The company called to offer a flag pole they say they’ll install in front of her apartment in the next few weeks, Oregon Live reports. They also offered to provide an indoor stand and flag.

  1. Take the flag pole offer. It displays our Flag better, and would be a testament to standing up for your rights!

  2. So now are they gonna get a flag cleaner to clean the bird poop off when a bird flys over or sits at the top of the flag pole a drops a load on the flag.
Seems to me that they should if they are going to do that to that grandmother over something like they did to her.

  3. I would say in this case really seems the apt.community trying to handle this well, keep the bitch who whined out in first place happy but still allows women to fly her flag, and they are giving her choices, seems pretty fair to me.I personally would never again live in a townhouse/condo/hoa association ever again,I need the acerage to give me the freedom to do whatever the hell i want while at same time not bothering other folks, tis a win/win.
