Is Bayer Poisoning Your Pet While They Kill the Bees?

Bayer uses the same insecticide that has been banned throughout the EU in one of their best selling flea and tick products, Advantix. They have no problem selling imidacloprid-containing insecticides to U.S. dog and cat owners, even though it has been linked to seizures in anecdotal accounts, and is certainly a neurotoxin which is not entirely safe for your favorite furry friend.

This product is brought to you by the same company that is happy to poison the planet in other ways, too – namely through the creation of neonicotinoid pesticides which coat about 90% of U.S. corn seeds and seeds of increasing portions of other major crops like soy. These chemicals have emerged as a likely trigger for colony collapse disorder, as evidenced again here in this NBC News report.

Imidacloprid is in the neonicotinoid class of insecticides. It is included in the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) scientific report, which identified “high acute risks” for bees as they are exposed via dust in several crops such as corn, cereals and sunflowers, to residues in pollen and nectar in crops like oilseed rape and sunflower and to guttation in corn. Nonetheless, the US Environmental Protection Agency has not banned the product, nor made any provisions to limit its use.

As if GMO poisons weren’t enough – Bayer Animal ‘Health’ brings you pet poison too.

The company also recently admitted that there is no way to stop the uncontrolled spread of its genetically modified crops.

“Even the best practices can’t guarantee perfection,” said Mark Ferguson, the company’s defense lawyer in a recent trial launched by two Missouri farmers suffered from contaminated crops caused by Bayer’s GMO seed.

Yet we will trust them with our pets?

There is a much safer solution to fleas and ticks.

Borax, sold in the same place as laundry soap at your grocery store, will easily kill fleas and ticks in your home. It is a more natural alternative, and it won’t cause colony collapse disorder, or harm your pet. While it can take some time in order to eradicate fleas completely, sometimes up to several months, those fleas will be gone for good, and you won’t have harmed the environment and supported a GMO-promoting company in the process.

Bayer AG has had to pay over $750 million in damages to farmers to end legal battles over their GMO rice,. Should we really wait until the evidence is conclusive that its Advantix products are killing our pets? We already know that the company’s insecticide is killing our bees – we shouldn’t be supporting their chemical monopoly any longer.
