Israeli PM treated spy chief announcement ‘like a reality TV show’

The Daily Mail

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been accused of treating the announcement of the new head of his spy agency like the unveiling of a reality TV show winner.

The country’s media were full of praise for the appointment of Yossi Cohen to lead the once-secretive Mossad.

However, the circus that surrounded the whole announcement has been criticised by the Israeli press.

Camera crews arrived in their numbers for a statement on the unnamed figure live on TV from 8.15pm yesterday.

But Netanyahu arrived an hour later, adding to the suspense of the nation, but not doing himself any favours with the media.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (left with Yossi Cohen) has been accused of treating the announcement of the new head of his spy agency like the unveiling of a reality TV show winner

One report said that Mr Cohen and the two other candidates were only told, over the phone, shortly before live unveiling, according to The Telegraph.

‘This is undoubtedly a good appointment, but we could have dispensed with the reality TV show that Netanyahu produced last night,’ wrote one commentator in the Ma’ariv newspaper.

A Yedioth Ahronoth said the whole unveiling was ‘like something straight out of American Idol or Survivor’ and ‘hardly dignified what is one of the most sensitive positions in the intelligence community’.
