John Hiatt – Wintertime Blues

John Hiatt

I’ve been too long with my nose in a book
I hope you sing just as good as you look
Come on over baby, I got a song for you
A little jump of something I call
The wintertime blues

I wanna hear those mockingbird wings
I want gravy on everything
Lovin’ in the kitchen
What have we got to lose
Just a nasty case of
These ol’ wintertime blues

Cold as snot with a big frozen smile
Ain’t foolin’ nobody after a while
Time to let the cat out
I’ve got a real short fuse
I’m just about to blow up
These ol’ wintertime blues

There’s no spring
There was never any spring
Spring’s a long gone thing
There won’t ever be a spring no more

At least that’s the way it feels when your
Skin is cracked and peeled
And you’ve been livin’ under
sixty pounds of blanket
And the snow’s drifting up to your window
And you’re out of firewood
And the wolf is howling at your door

Three hours of day light
and all of them gray
The suicide prevention group has all run away
I’m running out of groceries
I ain’t got no rubber shoes
Bring the bacon baby
I got the wintertime blues

I could cut a hole in the floor
Catch you a fish by a quarter to four
But I’m stuck up this mountain
Where I got a bird’s eye view
Of couple more months of these
ol’ wintertime blues

And it’s a one, two
My lips are turning blue
Come on over baby
What have we got to lose
Just a nasty case of
These ol’ wintertime blues

And it’s three, four
I’m stiff as Al Gore
Come on over baby
What have we got to lose
Just a nasty case of these ol’
wintertime blues

Well, it’s the same old drill
For Punxsutawney Phil
If he sees his own shadow
I’m shootin’ to kill

Come on over baby
I stand accused
There’s a man going crazy up here
With the wintertime blues

    1. Yea rbeason, just love John Hiatt. Happy you liked it. I’ll get you some Walk On in a future post. 🙂 Thought this one was pertinent to what’s outside. 🙂

      1. lespaul….
here is the one song I referred to… myself. This is a new artist….not a high know.n..one..(for myself).A Worthy Musician, Certainly….well, here is the specific link. to the song
which I suppose you already know and have listened to….if you go to youtube…its’s just
        John Hiatt…”walk on”
        then nothing else…it’s not a reference to an album…only a single recording…

        1. Yea rbeason, I only realized after I sent it in it was the song you were referring to and not the album. My bad. I’ll get it right on a future post, sorry 🙁

        2. Thanks rbeason, it’s also a pleasure for me to have “met” and “talk” to you also. 🙂

          1. tks and perhaps its true of you
there’s a player of music within you as there is within myself…(an instrument)
my entire life…until, also, am placed within the last confines…
And in “the early morning rain, with a dollar in my hand”…some words from
a Gordon lightfoot song you may well know….and an achin’ in my heart and my pockets full of sand….

  1. tks…LesPaul………..and Mary Ford….remember that? Course you do.
In The Early Morning Rain…..with a dollar in my hand, and an achin’ in my heart and my pockets full of sand…” a gordon lightfoot song you probably know…(nothing to do with lespaul and his band, actually his wife..)
” and there she goes my friend, big 707 on down the line”
    my pleasure also, LesPaul…
    Music….IS
doesn’t take notes, doesn’t take names, only listeners, writers, performers have a say….and each belongs to the other. In so, tis, a magic, ongoing throughout all peoples times…..since china invented paper of which to write the notes of Nature upon the page of a scale….tks…to you

    1. Yes, and the musician in me has been my best friend always. I think you know what I mean. I know Gordon’s music well. Also Mary Ford, great signer and guitarist in her own right. Les Paul was an incredible guitarist.
Though a bit before my “time” I came to know and appreciate them both. Chet Atkins was also a superb guitar player. Remember Chester and Lester? Regards rbeason.

      1. there you go…”the musician within me has been my best friend always”….me Too! And it Stands for honesty…that musician, i mean…least does for me..
Beauty? Oh My!! Without the music, the word may not exist. Strong statement, agreed. Strong proof to back it up also…regards here also….

        1. I could not for the life of me imagine a world without music. It is something that transends, race, language and gender and is a true unifing force. But you already know that. 🙂

          1. this is close to the level i am at on this instrument…when you have the time…go to youtube.com/
            wine Me Up by davepetalsteel
i don’t use this instrument to drag notes or phrases together as most players of the instument do……its’s potential is unlimited of what a musician can do with it….i have a back ground of 1st accordian, then trombone, some piano and this….from age five…the interaction of and releasing of, music…..is right up there…with………I AM….is it not…No am not jewish…or any organized religious thought group…spiritual, yes…that also belongs to all….best to you

  2. Cool instrument 🙂 always loved it. I listened to Wine me up, Sweet Memories and Country Boy with John Stanner. Beautifully played.
Keep looking, I’ve sent one in for you rbeason, it should be up soon. 🙂
