Though the stories reported from the Gaza Strip are horrible, it can feel far from Louisville, insulated in the middle of the United States. But not for Louisville native Josh Roberts. The 27-year-old enlisted in the Israeli Defense Force and is now a soldier in the Holy Land. Instead of running from this dangerous land, he ran to it, and now finds himself in the middle of this conflict.
This came to light in a recent issue of Community, a newspaper serving the city’s Jewish community. Roberts wrote an open letter in the newspaper, describing why he did what he did, what it has been like to be in the middle of the fighting, and what he wishes would happen for the region. It was published in the July 25 edition of the newspaper.
There aren’t many like Roberts. The IDF estimates there are about 1,000 Americans in the IDF. In his letter Roberts did not provide the exact date he enlisted.
We’ve tried to reach Roberts various times to learn more about what it’s like over there, from his perspective, but so far have been unsuccessful. Here are some excerpts of what he wrote to the readers of Community.
Roberts grew up in Louisville, went to Atherton High School, and got his bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisville. After graduating he traveled to Israel for half a year, and became close with some of the people he met there, including a female guide named Lior, and a male friend named Ran, who was to join the Israeli army in a year. Roberts promised to come back after his trip to fight alongside him.
