The French capital was rocked by two explosions in the suburbs.

Several people are feared dead and it is unclear how many people have been injured in the blast.

It is thought one person has been seriously injured in the explosion in Seine-Saint-Denis while four others have been wounded.

Early reports suggest the explosion was caused by gas cannisters which exploded in a 45-year-old property, leaving the homeowner in a critical condition.

The blast was heard a number of streets away leaving residents worried for their safety.

Captain Guillaume Fresse of the city’s fire department said: “The explosion that took place in a house was followed by a fire.

“According to a provisional report, there are four casualties.”

Around 30 firefighters have rushed to the scene at Gournay-sur-Marne, a commune in the eastern suburb of Noisy-le-Grand.

Residents near the explosion said the blast shook their homes as they heard a loud noise.

It is thought a gas leak caused the explosions but the cause has not been identified.

The blast comes days after an apartment block was blown apart in a gas explosion in the city.

Fire ripped through the apartment block in the suburb of Boulogne Billancourt on January 20.

The explosion blew the walls of the building off leaving five people injured as huge plumes of black smoke were sent into the air.
