Mexico tops the list of the largest lithium deposit in the world , according to the ranking made by Mining Technology.

The report indicates that the mine of this element located in Sonora is the largest element deposit with proven and probable reserves of 243.8 million tons.

“Sonora will be an open pit operation that is proposed to be developed in two stages, and the first will have a production capacity of 17,500 tons of lithium carbonate per year . The second stage will double the production capacity to 35,000, ”said this report called “ The 10 largest lithium mines in the world ” .

In the list, which ranks the 10 largest lithium mines on the planet, according to proven and probable reserves, Sonora exceeds Humboldt County, Nevada (179.4 tons per year) and Port Hedland in Australia (151.94 tons per year).

“We are in an energy transition worldwide and in the federal government we are working on that. Lithium is going to become the new oil, because it is the base of the accumulators (for electric cars. The lithium will be strategic, ”said today the head of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Victor Manuel Toledo.

In recent days, members of the Sonora government have met with the Chinese capital mining company Ganfeng Lithium , who are looking to settle in the region to invest in that area.

“They have more than seven thousand employees and are very interested in coming in January , they come on a commercial mission to Sonora, because they are interested in being here seeing the possibility of installing to set up a battery factory,” said Jorge Vidal, secretary Sonoran economy.

Importance of lithium in the present and future

Federal government documents indicate that there are various products that can be generated with lithium , such as electric car batteries and gadgets as there are advantages over traditional pillars, such as:

  • Higher energy density by weight and volume
  • Longer life useful
  • Lower weight
  • Operation at high capacity and low temperatures
  • Longer storage time

Another application is in the military industry, since the use of lithium oxyhalide batteries were selected for use in air defense missiles and other programs in the United States.

large pharmacological market has been potentiated , since the incorporation of metallic lithium and some compounds are used as catalysts in the production of analgesics, anti-cholesterol agents, antihistamines, contraceptives, sleep inducers, some types of steroids, tranquilizers, vitamin A and other products.

Lithium carbonate, pharmacological grade, is used in the treatment of manic depressive psychosis.

Why the interest by the Chinese?

“Lithium carbonate, pharmacological grade, is used in the treatment of manic depressive psychosis.”
