Tech Dirt – by Mike MasnickOver the past few months, one thing we keep hearing over and over again from defenders of the intelligence community is that everything is under control and “legal” because Congress has powerful oversight. We’ve shown, repeatedly, how that’s something of a joke. The intelligence community has lied repeatedly, has withheld documents and is generally nonresponsive to oversight attempts by Congress. And, with the reports that the CIA spied on the Senate Intelligence Committee, we also find out that for all the bluster and talk of oversight, folks in Congress are actually scared by the intelligence community.
In response to Senator Dianne Feinstein’s speech last week calling out the CIA for spying on her staffers, Rep. Nancy Pelosi was asked to comment and gave what might be the most revealing comments to date as to why Congress is so scared of the CIA:
“I salute Sen. Feinstein,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference of the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. “I’ll tell you, you take on the intelligence community, you’re a person of courage, and she does not do that lightly. Not without evidence, and when I say evidence, documentation of what it is that she is putting forth.”
Pelosi added that she has always fought for checks and balances on CIA activity and its interactions with Congress: “You don’t fight it without a price because they come after you and they don’t always tell the truth.
A few months back, the ACLU had posted something questioning whether or not the intelligence community might be blackmailing Congress. And, quite frequently when we write about the intelligence community, we see suggestions in the comments that certain politicians probably cover for the NSA and CIA because they know what those agencies “have on them.” I’ve always dismissed those kinds of claims as being a bit far-fetched, even if they have plenty of historical precedent. So far, there’s certainly been no direct evidence of that happening.
And yet… Pelosi’s comments certainly seem to hint at even more nefarious activity by the intelligence community against politicians who dare to actually do the job of oversight. The point of that ACLU post linked above is that, even if it’s not happening, the fact that we can’t definitively rule it out is a serious problem for democracy. And just the fact that some of the most powerful members of Congress, who are theoretically in charge of oversight, are now publicly admitting that they’re scared of how the CIA fights back when they take them on, suggests that the intelligence community really is rotten to the core. And Congressional oversight, as it stands today, is clearly not able to deal with the issue by itself.

WHEN ONE OF THESE SCOUNDRELS DOESN’T ACT OR VOTE THE WAY THE ELITES WANT THEM TO THEY ARE BLACKMAILED OR FORCED TO RESIGN OR KILLED, I.E. PAUL WELLSTONE ET AL. THAT’S HOW THEY CONTROL THE KASKISTOCRACY (GOVT BY THE WORST).
JFK was killed in part because he was going to dismantle the CIA to the four winds, fire J Edgar Hoover,not allow Israel to get nuclear weapons and generally tell the American citizen during his second term, just how evil the under-powers that be, run our United States Government…most likely, he is one of the last people ever elected to the US Gov..who got after this most criminal element nestled deep in our midst. Sad that those who are elected have no stomach for their duties….
Former Pres Truman, said before dying, if he had known what the cia would become he would never have started it…(there were tenticles of it during WW2) how does this all end? Wish I could live another 50 years to find out!
Hippocrits as hippocrits will be. They are no more afraid of the cia than they are of any other govt run alphabet group. They all hang out together when the day is done and laugh and toast each other about what they did eariler in their day – yaou can bet on it.

…if I were elected President…I’d ignore the issues with the CIA/FBI/DHS/TSA for the first year of my first term in office…all the while..I’d have a top-secret operation being put in place…targeting a specific day on the calender…at which time I’d unleash divisions of soldiers all across the government spectrum..and I’d start arresting these people for treason…I would surround their buildings with armed force..give them 1 hour to empty the building and bring themselves into custody …and then I’d level the buildings with munitions and bulldozers…anyone still caught inside…tough-beans….die in the rubble like all the 911 victims…convict the rest of treason and hang them…

….yes..that is probably true…I was making my statement based upon the idea that I could get away with the covert action without anyone knowing until ‘go-day”. However…as a “Federally Protected Whistle-Blower” for over two decades with US DoD…I can tell you that you are spot on with regard to the actions taken against WB’s….in my case..I was fortunate enough to have been raised by corrupt parents..and when they threatened me at work (DoD)…I was able to tape-record their threats and long term agenda to “get me”…so in the end they had to retire me and pay my pension..which pisses them off immensely…ha!
