Orange County sheriff ends all immigration holds

The Fresno Bee

 — The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will no longer detain inmates past their scheduled release dates in order to hold them for federal immigration authorities.

The Orange County Register reports (http://bit.ly/1v2xSZD ) the agency announced Monday that it was expanding its recent policy on immigration holds to include all inmates.

The department is joining law enforcement agencies across the country — including in Los Angeles, San Diego and Riverside — that are no longer holding inmates who are potentially deportable beyond the inmates’ jail terms.

The practice was deemed unconstitutional in a federal court ruling.

Now Orange County sheriff’s officials are calling agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement to alert them prior to inmates’ release, giving the agency an opportunity to pick up inmates as they’re walking out of jail.

  1. Sounds like everyone’s dumping their criminal wet-backs onto the streets at once. No coincidence if you ask me.
